The Italian fugitive, accused of coordinating the shipment of large cocaine loads from Latin America to Europe, has been arrested in Colombia.
The head of the National Police in Colombia has identified Emanuele Gregorini, who is also known as “dollar” as “Head of the Italian Mafia Latin America.”
He said Gregorini was traced to an apartment in the seaside town of Cartagena in a multinational operation that includes Italian, British and Colombian investigators.
He was escaped since 2023, when prosecutors accused him of being a key figure in the “Lombardy Mafia System”, which they described as an alliance between Camora, Nostra Hair and Ndrangheta Mafia.
Police accuse Gregorini of playing a key role in organizing cocaine shipments from Colombian port cities Cartagena, Barankila and Santa Martha in Europe.
Colombian police chief Carlos Triana said Gregorini’s arrest was a “heavy blow” for transnational trade unions.
He also described him as an “invisible drug” that did not draw attention to himself.
The surveillance footage published by the Colombian authorities showed him to go to the gym and visit local restaurants in the superb neighborhood where he hired an apartment, apparently without fear of being recognized.
Prosecutors say his arrest in Colombia indicates an increased presence of the Italian mafia in Latin America.
According to Insight CrimeA cerebral trust specializing in organized crime, European criminal networks establish their own drugs for drug smuggling in South America and do not rely on intermediaries.
In particular, the Italian Mafia groups have expanded their presence in Colombia and Brazil in recent years, the brain reservoir says.
In October, Luigi Belvedere, one of the most sought after men in Italy, was detained in the town of Medellin, where he posed at the grave of the late Colombian Lord of Drugs Pablo Escobar.
