Archangel Cressa/FacebookAn Italian sniper dog was killed after eating sausages full of nails that were thrown into his kennel, his coach said.
Bruno, a seven-year-old Bloodhound, was welcomed as a hero for finding nine missing people during his career and was once awarded the Prime Minister of Italy.
Georgia Meloni condemned “The Murder” Dusty, Fearing, Unacceptable “in an X.” Thank you for everything you did, Bruno, “she said.
The coach of the dog Arkangelo Kalesa said he knew who was responsible and swore to make them pay for their actions.
The murder is believed to have been committed because the revenge for the role of Bruno is the disassembly of dogs to fight dogs.
“I died with you today,” said G -N Karesa in a Facebook post, announcing Bruno’s death.
He said he had found the dog – which he, in his opinion, saw as a “brother” – on Friday morning at his kennel at the Endas search and rescue training center in Taranto, Puglia.
“You have been struggling all your life to save people and now the person who did it to you,” he added. “You are, you are and you will continue to be my hero.”
The coach said the Italian police and the prosecutor’s office had launched a joint investigation into the murder.
Turning to the perpetrators, G -n Carea said, “I know who you are and you will pay for it.”
He said the local media had received death threats during the weeks leading to Bruno’s death.
“It was no accident. They want me to retreat. But I will never succumb. It’s an abomination made for money and revenge,” he told Corriere della Sera.
Italian MP and animal rights activist Michela Vitoria Brambila has called on the police to bring those responsible to court.
She suggested that Bruno was directed by criminals because of his role in the seized dogs used in the battles.
Recently enhanced law, headed by Brambila, can punish anyone who killed an animal using torture with up to four years in prison and a fine of 60,000 euros (£ 51,000).
Brambila called for this law to be implemented because of Bruno’s “long and painful death” from internal bleeding caused by the sausages filled with nails.
“We owe it to this noble animal,” she said in a statement.
