Jair Bolsonaro’s attorneys will present their protective arguments to his trial at the Supreme Court in Brazil on Wednesday.

The former Brazilian president has ruled the country from January 2019 to December 2022 and has been charged with a leading attempt to coup after his defeat in the 2022 presidential election.

On Tuesday, the judge, chairing the trial, claims that Bolsonaro tried to install a “true dictatorship” after losing to his left rival, Louise Luis Inacio Lula da Silva.

Bolsonaro denied the allegations and denied the trial against him as a politically motivated “witch hunt”.

The former president did not attend the session on Tuesday, which marked the beginning of the last phase of the process.

The group of five judges of the Supreme Court is expected to reach a sentence by September 12. If found guilty, Bolsonaro may be sentenced to more than 40 years in prison.

His lawyer indicated health reasons for Bolsonaro’s decision to follow the proceedings on Tuesday from his home in Brazil. The 70-year-old former leader has been stabbed along the 2018 campaign trail and has since experienced recurring health problems.

The Brazil General, Paulo Gennet, outlined the accusations against the former president and his seven alleged coincidence in the opening session.

They are accused of a leading armed criminal organization, trying to violence from the democratic rule of the law, an attempt to coup, damage to federal property and worsening of the listed heritage – the accusations they refuse.

The allegations date back to before Bolsonaro’s supporters to storm government buildings on January 8, 2023.

Following an extensive investigation, police claims that Bolsonaro and his seven teammates have planned acts to abolish the democratic rule of law and keep him in power in 2019.

Police say he had a “full knowledge” of a plan for the murder of Louis Inasio Lula da Silva – who was the president was elected at the time – along with the ruling half of Lula and the Justice of the Supreme Court Alexander de Moraes.

One of the eight men in court, the former Bolsonaro Mauro Sid Mauroro Mauro Sid, signed a legal basis agreement, agreeing to provide evidence in exchange for a lighter sentence.

According to prosecutors, some of the most harmful evidence they have against Bolsonaro comes from information provided by CID.

The CID lawyer spoke at the session on Tuesday and stressed that his client had not been forced to reach the legal basis agreement, thus refuting the accusations that his testimony had been stressed.

One of Bolsonaro’s lawyer, Celso Vilardi, said he would answer “the session on Wednesday’s session to what CID’s lawyer said.

After all the defendants’ lawyers have taken their turn to speak, the judges will vote one by one. This is likely to happen in one of the sessions scheduled for next week.

The bigger part of three of the five votes are needed to find a defendant guilty.

Any judge may then recommend a sentence for those who are found guilty.

Bolsonaro and his teammates can appeal the full supreme court if found guilty.
