A Los Angeles judge resents two brothers who have been serving life in prison for the killings of their parents since 1989 at the Beverly Hills mansion, which makes them acceptable for conditional release.

Judge Michael Jesich gave Eric and Lyle Menendes a new sentence of 50 years to life. The decision on their potential release will be taken to hear conditional release in June.

The couple acknowledged the murder of Kitty and Jose Menendes, but said they had acted since self -defense after years of abuse and have been rehabilitated ever since.

Prosecutors claim that the brothers have thoroughly planned the murders of the rifle to have access to their parents’ wealth, are yet to take responsibility and should not be released.

The notorious case that caused books, documentaries and dramas still divides America.

The brothers gave an emotional statement – through video – to the court during the hearing on Tuesday.

The court heard relatives in detail how the case affected their family and asks the judge to allow the release of brothers and sisters from prison.

The cousin of the brothers Anamaria Baralt, who has been close to them since they are children, told the judge that they deserve a “second chance in life”.

“It was a nightmare,” she said. “I am desperate for this process to end.”

Sometimes Eric and Lyle seemed emotional as the family tells how their crimes influenced them. They both wiped their eyes at times, with Eric covering his mouth or putting his head in his hands at other times.

Baralt often talks to Eric and Lyle, she told the court and testified that they had taken “ownership of their actions.”

She said they admitted that they had tried to direct their previous process – as Lyle told her that he asked a witness to lie when he testified.

“They are very different men from the boys as they were,” she said.
