King Charles warned of the need for democracies such as the United Kingdom and Italy to stand together in such problematic international times as he became the first monarch in the UK to turn to the two palaces of the Italian Parliament.

The King received many years of standing ovation from parliamentarians in Rome as he gave a speech on the third day of his state visit to Italy.

The visit also coincided with the 20th anniversary of the King and Queen’s wedding.

By exporting part of the Italian speech, he talks about the long history between the United Kingdom and Italy and the shared culture, returning to the ancient Romans arriving on the coast of the UK.

The king told parliament that he wanted to strengthen ties with Italy, “a country, dear to my heart.”

As a community head, he also spoke about the role of Canadian troops in helping Italy’s liberation in World War II.

The King began the day by meeting with Italy’s Prime Minister Georgia Meloni, receiving a ceremonial welcome to a red carpet in Pamphiles of Doria Villa on the outskirts of Rome.
