In his first move after his historical victory in the election, Prime Minister Mark Carney invited the King in Canada

A decade ago, a portrait of the British monarch sparked order in Canadian politics. Now the king is invited to give a speech from the throne. What has changed?

In 2011, shortly after forming a conservative majority government, Prime Minister Stephen Harper caused a national turmoil when he tried to emphasize Canada’s ties with the British monarchy. In one example, he replaced two works of art from an artist in Quebec with a portrait of the queen.

Some rebuked the gesture as without connection with modern times. Canada has been looking for increasing independence from the British monarchy throughout its 157-year history, remaining part of the community.

When liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau inherited Harper four years later, the Queen’s portrait descended, Quebec’s paintings returned.

A paradoxical change in the crown happened quickly forward to 2025 and in Canada’s relationship. In a transparent display of Canada’s sovereignty and independence against threats from US President Donald Trump, Prime Minister Mark Carney – Liberal – invited King Charles III to open the 45th Canadian Parliament.

This move is “a huge affirmation and a statement about the uniqueness of Canada and its traditions,” Justin Vovk, a Canadian royal historian, told the BBC, “a theatrical display that aims to show what the Canadians separate from the Americans” and not, as Trump is often repeated. “

Both countries are former British colonies, but the founders of America took a different way and interrupted all official ties to the crown nearly 250 years ago.

The separation of Canada from the monarchy is more gradual and its connections have never been completely broken. Canada’s parliamentary system is modeled after the UK in Westminster. The British Monarch is still officially head of state, but their duties are often fulfilled by their Canadian representative called Governor General.

The loyalty to the crown is regarded as important for Canada politicians in the 19th century, who want to support the United States, said Canadian royal historian and commentator Carolyn Harris.

This later changed in the 1960s, as Quebec – the majority province in Canada – began to defend his own distinct identity and threatened the separation. This led to an era of politicians such as Leicester B Pearson and Pierre Elliott Trudeau, who worked to unfold Canada from their British colonial past.

In 1982, Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau repatorted the Canada Constitution, giving full legislative power to the federal government and the provinces and removed it from the British Parliament.

D -Ja Harris noted that Canada remains a constitutional monarchy during these periods. However, what was hesitant was how much the prime minister of the day was choosing to accept this connection.

Trudeau and Queen Elizabeth II signed the proclamation of the Constitution, giving Canada complete control over its own constitution in 1982.

Carney’s invitation to King Charles III signals that his government will be the one that is much more firm for the crown, said G -N Vovk, noting “a very different tone” than the previous liberals.

The British monarch has not taken a speech on the throne of Canada since 1977 and has not found a brand new session of Parliament since 1957, which has made the forthcoming visit to the King a truly rare occasion.

It comes in a subsequent moment for Canada.

Carney strongly campaign in a campaign to face Trump after the US president spent months undermined Canada’s sovereignty, saying he would be better as a state in the United States.

Trump has also imposed a series of tariffs that threaten Canada’s economic stability, given that the US is the largest trading partner so far.

When he announced the visit last month, Carney called it a “historical honor that corresponds to the gravity of our time”.

He added that the visit to the King “clearly emphasizes the sovereignty of our country.”

And historians, G -n Vovk and Harris, note that the greater part of the modern population of Canada is indifferent to the British monarchy. Some are even critical of him.

The coronation of King Charles III in 2023 made the way to have a new control of the historical abuse of the crown of the indigenous population in Canada and questions about whether the new monarch would turn to reconciliation.

Quebec politicians are also still urging Canada to reduce connections with the monarchy. On Friday, the party of the separatist block Quebecoas said that he would again strive to eliminate the need for the selected employees to swear in allegiance to the King.

Watch: What do Canadians do the monarchy in the Trump era?

Some Canadians will be intrigued by the pompi and the competition of the King’s visit, said G -N Vovk, but his main purpose is to send a political message from Canada to the world.

This is also a way of Prime Minister Carney to improve relations with Trump, who is a famous fan of British monarchy and her history.

“Strengthening the connection with the monarchy puts a seal on legitimacy, which goes beyond individual parties and the current political climate,” said G -N Vovk. “Politicians come and go, but the monarchy has always remained.”

He also works to bind Canada closer to Europe – a key goal of Prime Minister Carney, a former governor of the Bank of England, who speaks of the need for Canada to find new allies while moving with changing relations with the United States.

The visit is also remarkable for the crown.

This will be the first king in Canada as a monarch governing. He and the Queen had intended to visit last year, but canceled their plans due to their diagnosis of cancer.

The palace has promised a speech on the throne, which “will mark a significant moment between the Head of State and the Canadian people.”

And while it will be a short trip – the King and the Queen will arrive on Monday morning and leave on Tuesday night – the palace said they hoped the trip would be “influential”.
