Hours before South Korea President Lee Jay Mun had to meet with US President Donald Trump, the social publication of the truth was dropped.
“What is happening in South Korea?” Trump writes, pointing to “purge or revolution” – which many consider to be a reference to the pursuit of former President Yon Suk Youol for his unsuccessful attempt to impose military position last December.
But Lee turned on the charm and diverted a repetition of what happened to Ukraine Volodimir Zelenski or Cyril Ramafosa in South Africa.
But the meeting was dominated by Trump’s constant references to North Korea, and despite Lee’s flattery, he did not give much by easeing the problems of trade and defense. Here are three basic poles.
Lee’s team was upset at this meeting, and they had good reasons to be: Trump was historically cautious to South Korea, although he was an ally of the United States. In the past, he has accused him of free charging by tens of thousands of US troops on the peninsula, helping to defend themselves against North Korea. He also criticizes Seoul’s defense costs and his trade surplus with the United States.
Lee, a leftist politician, has a reputation in Washington who plays to the worst of Trump’s fears. He is skeptical of the American Alliance and said he wanted to develop stronger ties with China. It is also painted by some American conservative commentators such as “anti -American”.
Lee’s team is worried that he can be subjected to an oval office and will have to defend himself against the theories of right wing conspiracy.
The truth social publication in the hours before the meeting would scare them. Trump’s ominous sound message seems to refer to the consequences of the South Korean military crisis last December, and the efforts of the government and prosecutors of Mr. Li are put to investigate President Ion Suc Jeol, his wife and former members of his government.
This is something that is far right in South Korea, and even some in the United States have faced.
It was the nightmare scenario for South Korean officials – that G -n Lee could be forced to defend himself from the theories of the right wing conspiracy. But when the meeting came, G -n Trump raised the question just to wipe it away quickly as a probably misunderstanding.
But Lee’s strategy works clearly. First, he was amazed at the “bright and beautiful” new species of the Oval Cabinet, after which he praised the personal rapprochement that the US president built with the North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
“The only person who can make progress is you, the president,” said G -n Lee. “If you become a peacemaker, then I’ll help you by being a pacemaker.”
Lee even jokes about the construction of Trump’s tower in North Korea and plays golf there.
Ghetto imagesIf it seems a little fouled, it was South Korea’s strategy for this high -bet meeting that seeks to cover trade, the role of US troops in South Korea, and how much Seoul spends on its defense.
Lee’s number one purpose was to make sure he left the Oval Office of Trump’s good side.
Later, when he was asked by a reporter about his worse comments about the South Korean authorities who attack churches, Trump said he had heard about it through “Intel”, but that “doesn’t sound like South Korea.”
The hearing was probably a “misunderstanding”, Trump said. When Lee said the authorities were investigating the claim, Trump said he was sure they would “make” him.
Lee seems to have avoided a Zelenski moment in the White House – and his team can sigh relief.
Ghetto imagesIt may seem strange to see President Trump sitting next to South Korea leader, at their first meeting in history, talking about how well he did with Kim Jong Un, the sworn enemy south and how eagerly aware of him.
But this is actually one of the few areas in the common place these two leaders have.
The relatively new South Korea President Lee Jun is taking a new approach to North Korea from that of his predecessor, who has been accused of antagonizing Kim Jong Un.
In fact, Lee initiated the conversation about Kim Jong Un, praised President Trump for the personal rapprochement he built with the North Korean leader, and asks him to act as a “peacemaker” on the Korean Peninsula.
Lee wants to talk to Kim to establish a peaceful relationship between the north and the south, but he knows that Trump has a much bigger chance to do this than he.
Trump, who met Kim three times in his first term, often brings out the dictator. Trump known said that the couple fell in love with love while exchanging letters.
“I spent a lot of free time with him talking about things we probably shouldn’t talk about,” Trump said on Monday. “I get along with him really well.”
“I look forward to meeting Kim Jong Un in the future,” Trump added.
The question is whether Kim Jong Un will want to talk to one of them.
North Korea has repeatedly rejected Lee’s attempts to speak and ignore US attempts to restart dialogue. She did not close the door when talking to Trump, but suggested that it would have to be much different than before – based on the fact that North Korea would not give up its nuclear weapons.
This is already something Seoul and Washington should try to navigate.
High on the agenda for the visit to Lee’s White House was trade and defense. But no specific agreements were concluded for either.
Seoul managed to negotiate US tariffs for South Korean goods up to 15%after Trump threatened the percentages of up to 25%. This came after Seoul agreed to invest $ 350 billion ($ 264.1 billion) in the United States – $ 150 billion to help help build ships.
South Korea has a thriving shipbuilding industry, building more ships than any other country other than China, at a time when the US and Navy shipbuilding are in decline.
And just hours after Lee’s White House meeting, Korean air announced that it would buy 103 Boeing planesS
But the tariffs for South Korean goods will not be reduced soon. “I think we have a deal for trade,” Trump told reporters after the meeting without providing more details. “They had some problems with this, but we adhered to our weapons.”
The meeting also made a little bit to move other Thornier problems to bilateral ties.
On Monday, Trump was surrounding a question about the withdrawal of US troops from South Korea, an idea that the White House was reported to have repeatedly accused South Korea of taking advantage of US protection and did not pay enough for defense.
Also, on Monday, Trump sailed the idea of letting the United States own a piece of air base on Osan Osan, south of Seoul, jointly operated by the United States and South Korea.
But some confidence that Lee received from Trump, at least, was the economic union between their countries. The US and South Korea “need each other” for trade, Trump told reporters in the presence of Lee.
“We love what they do, we love their product, we love their ships, we love many of the things they do,” he said. In the meantime, South Korea needs oil and gas, and the US will trade with them, he added.
