White House reporting
Ukraine President Volodimir Zelenski returned to the White House on Monday to meet with US President Donald Trump for fresh conversations aimed at ending the war in Ukraine.
Several European leaders also supported their plans to attend the meeting, days after Trump met with Russian President Putin in Alaska for a summit that failed to end the fire.
Here are the key assumes from the conversations in Washington.
Given his acrostic last visit to the Oval Cabinet in February, the Ukrainian president settled on considerable lengths to be collegial and fascinated by his American hosts – including the noise of six “Thank you” within the first minutes of the meeting.
The last time he was in the White House, Zelenski quarreled by Vice President JD Vance for a lack of gratitude for the support of the United States for Ukraine during the war.
Another dispute during the February meeting – Zelenski’s clothing – also returns.
This time, Zelenski was dressed in a dark suit, not in his traditional military garment, and looked well prepared with a joke when he was asked about his outfit by the same reporter, who had previously criticized him for not wearing a costume in the oval office.
After the reporter told him that he looked “fabulous”, Zelenski stepped back, was wearing the same suit as last time, taking a laugh from the reporters, Trump and other employees in the room.
“As you can see, I changed,” he added.
ReutersZelenski also tried to play Trump’s family during the match, handing over to President of the United States from Ukrainian first lady Olena Zelenska, which will be handed over to Melania Trump.
“It’s not for you – your wife,” he said.
The transmission of the letter comes only days after Trump gave away a letter from Melania to Vladimir Putin while she was in Alaska, in which she called on Putin to protect the “innocence” of children and “nourish the hope of the next generation”.
“She sees the heartbeat,” Trump told her wife’s letter to Putin.
“She would like to see him. And she says it very openly, very proud and with great sorrow, because so many people have been killed.”
One of the questions raised in Zelenski was what he would need from the United States to guarantee his country’s security. Was troops, intelligence, equipment?
In a moment, who conveyed the feeling of urgency, at first glance he tried to suppress most of the press conference, Zelenski leaned in his chair and said categorically: “Everything.”
“We need a strong Ukrainian army,” he added. “It’s about weapons, people, training missions and intelligence.”
Pressed to this by reporters, Trump made several references to KYIV security guarantees.
He said Europe would be the “first line of defense” for Ukraine, but promised to be “involved”.
“We will give them good protection,” the president said at one point.
It is the most pronounced that Trump has ever explored on the security guarantees, which are usually regarded as paramount to any type of transaction with Russia.
On Monday, the US President said last week’s Alaska Putin summit accepted that there would be security guarantees for Ukraine as part of any peace deal.
But the lack of details of what exactly these guarantees can be made of, applies to both Kiev and Europe, and behind the closed doors, leaders will undoubtedly try to impress Trump that the US deterrent should be more than simple.
The prolonged flow of weapons to Ukraine would be welcome; The promise of American boots on earth would be even more follow -up.
Such a level of engagement can be difficult to get at this stage in the United States.
But the fact that Trump does not exclude it completely will give Ukraine and her allies hopes that he can be convinced.
One of Trump’s many advertising goals is to organize a three -sided meeting with Zelenski and Putin.
Before his conversations with European leaders on Monday, he said it was now a matter of “when, not if” such a meeting would be held.
Although this may be an easier endeavor than determining the conditions of a peace transaction, it will in no case be direct.
ReutersFor months, Zelenski has been pushing him to meet Putin. It was probably a way to prove his argument that Russia was not seriously involved in the pursuit of peace, as he knew that Putin had no interest in agreeing to a meeting of that kind.
In fact, the Kremlin has repeatedly refused this, and two weeks ago claims that Russian and Ukrainian presidents have no reason to meet, while “after the appropriate distance” between the positions of the two countries is “overcome”.
Trump will hope that the distance is now overcome by his efforts to mediate.
