Italy has supported President Donald Trump’s proposal that the Vatican can mediate in negotiations to negotiate fire in Ukraine while he seems to want to withdraw from the process.

The Prime Minister’s service, George Meloni, said Italy is ready to “facilitate contacts and work for peace” in Ukraine, and this “looks positively” what he says is the Pope’s desire to host the Vatican talks.

In fact, there is still no healthy agreement on more discussions: the meeting last Friday between Russian and Ukrainian officials in Istanbul brought additional requests from Moscow, not progress.

Pope Leo said last week the Vatican is “always ready” to gather enemies and he will “make every effort” to prevail peace.

But the Holy See says that the idea of hosting or even mediation conversations – which Trump suggested is an option – is more hopefully now than any particular plan.

If the direct commitment continues, Ukraine seems open to the concept of the Vatican as a host.

Volodymyr Zelensky posted on X on Tuesday that he was talking to Georgia Meloni, including “Possible Platforms for Talking to the Russians”.

The Italian prime minister had, he said, “as always, cool ideas,” although he raised Turkey and Switzerland as alternative places.

The Kremlin may prefer to stay in Turkey. He talks about a process called “Istanbul Plus”, stylizes any conversation as follow -up on the transaction, originally discussed in Turkey, shortly after the full -scale invasion.

These terms, which included Ukraine, drastically reduce their own military, would be a capitulation for Kiev now.

But Russia also added: the plus part means recognizing its annexation in four partially occupied Ukraine regions as well as Crimea.

The real place matters a little to the Kremlin: all he wants is the discussion to be under the conditions of Vladimir Putin.

The prospect of meaningful progress, frankly, looks thin.

But can the Vatican give some additional moral authority in its quest for some kind of compromise?

The Catholic Church has a history of supporting conflict mediation, and it has already participated in negotiations with free prisoners and returning Ukrainian children abducted by Russia.

However, his real contribution there is unclear, as others played the same role.

On the other hand, the Vatican – especially any participation of the new Pope – would introduce a different tone of production.

His quiet style could not be more than the capitalized publications on the social media of Donald Trump and his brutal public exhibition with Zelenski in the oval office. And the setting seems to have already done wonders for men’s relationship.

It was at the funeral of Pope Francis that they were clicked deep in conversation, heads near, inside the Basilica of St. Peter.

The Vatican is proud of his diplomacy: therefore, when others torn the connections with Moscow after he began bombing Ukraine, the Catholic Church sent a Cardinal Messenger to talk to the Kremlin. It did not influence.

President Trump has made improvised conversations with Ukraine leader at Pope Francis’ funeral in St. Peter’s Basilica

Pope Francis, like Donald Trump, always avoided openly identify Russia as an aggressor. Vatican sources say it is to keep the door for dialogue Ajar, even when it looked hopeless.

But Francis upset the Ukrainians more, suggesting that Russia was “provoked” by NATO in its invasion. He then agreed that he might be reasonable to “raise the white flag” and surrender.

For Kyiv Pope Leo, a potential peace may be preferred. He was taken for records as a bishop who denies Russia’s invasion as an imperialist war and condemns crimes against humanity committed by Putin’s troops.

This is unlikely to downplay the Kremlin if the Vatican has ever hosted conversations.

“Putin can explain his position to the Pope, he believes this is fair. In his mind, Ukraine is not serious about peace talks,” said Tatiana Stanovia of Carnegie Russia Eurasia.

“I don’t believe for a second that the Pope can affect Putin’s understanding in some way.”

At this point, Russia is not under much pressure to give a position: all Donald Trump’s conversations about Putin’s punishment because of his intransigence has become a conversation about trade with Russia. Offering incentives, they do not threaten sanctions.

It is true that Moscow wanted a lot more.

“They want Zelenski to be removed both the US and the EU to stop military aid, but on this issue the United States was in Ukraine – from the Russian point of view,” says Tatiana Stanovia.

So Russia is ready to play a long game – which does not include compromises.

“If the Pope could help with Ukraine’s pressure, Putin would have no problem (with his participation),” she says.

This seems to be the real problem here. It works far deeper than whether the two sides eat appetizers or antipasts between hypothetical circles of fresh conversations.
