Mortality after a car driven in the crowd in Vancouver

“The number of people were killed” after a car was put into a crowd in the Canadian city of Vancouver, local police said.

Vancouver police said “many others” were injured during an accident at a street festival on Saturday night.

The force said the driver was in custody.

It is not yet known how many people have been killed.

In an X, police said that “a driver embarked on a crowd at E. 41’s street festival and Fraser” shortly after 20:00 local time on Saturday (03:00 GMT Sunday).

“We will provide more information when the investigation unfolds,” the statement continued.

Local media reported that a pedestrian group was hit by a car during the Lapu Lapu Annual Festival, which celebrates the Philippine culture.

Unspected footage on social media showed a number of police cars, ambulances and fire machines at the scene, with wounded people lying on the ground.

Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim said in an X statement that he was “shocked and deeply saddened by the horrific incident of today’s Lapu Lapu event”.

He continued: “Our thoughts have been affected and with the Philippine community of Vancouver during this incredibly difficult time.”
