North Korea has detained three shipyard officers because of an incident during a new warship on Wednesday, state media reported.
Parts from the bottom of the 5000 tons destroyer were crushed during the launch ceremony, throwing the vessel out of balance.
The investigation of the incident that North Korea leader Kim Jong -un has been identified as a “criminal act”.
KCNA, North Korea’s official news agency, identifies the detainees as chief engineer of the Northern Bate Shipyard, where the destroyer was built, as well as the construction manager and administrative manager.
The report says the three are “responsible for the accident”.
On Friday, KCNA said shipyard manager Hong Kil Ho was summoned by legal contractors.
Satellite images show that the vessel is lying on the side, covered with large blue tarpaulins, and part of the ship appears to be on land.
North Korea state media did not mention any casualties or injuries at the time, downplaying the damage.
KCNA reported that there were no holes at the bottom of the ship – contrary to the original reports.
“The right board of the hull was scratched and the breastfeeding section was flowing some seawater,” the agency said.
Kim said on Thursday the incident was caused by “absolute negligence, irresponsibility and unscientific empiricism”.
He added that those who made “irresponsible mistakes” would be considered at a plenary meeting next month.
It is not clear what punishment they can be confronted with, but the authoritarian state has a great protocol on human rights.
It is not uncommon for North Korea to disclose local accidents – although this is the rule several times in the past.
This particular incident comes weeks after North Korea revealed a similar 5,000-ton destroyer, Choe Hyon.
Kim had called this warship “breakthrough” in the modernization of the Navy of North Korea and said it would be located early next year.
