North Korea opens a beach resort that its leader Kim Jong Un hopes to strengthen tourism in the secret communist regime, state media reports.

Wonsan Kalma on the east coast will open for home tourists on July 1, six years after it was to be completed. It is unclear when he will welcome foreigners.

Kim grew up in a luxury in Vonson, where many of the country’s elite has private villas and tries to transform the city, which once hosted a missile test site.

The KCNA state media claims that the resort can hold up to 20,000 visitors, occupying 4 km (2.5 miles) of a beach, with hotels, restaurants, shopping malls and a water park – none of which can be checked.

Highly sanctioned for decades for its nuclear weapons program, North Korea is among the most overwhelming countries in the world. It pours the bigger part of its resources in the military, monuments and sights – often in Pyongyang – who have embellished the image and the cult of the Kim family, who have ruled the country since 1948.

Some observers say it’s an easy way for Pyongyang to make money. While foreign tourists are allowed, tourism groups are largely inclined to come from China and Russia, countries with which Pyongyang has long maintained friendly relations.

“I was hoping that this could signal a broader re-opening of international tourism, but unfortunately, it doesn’t seem to be the case,” says Rowan Beard, co-founder of Young Pioneer Tours, “BBC told.

Tourism from abroad hit the pandemic of Kovid, however, with the country closed its borders in early 2020. It did not scale the restrictions until mid -2023 and welcomed Russian visitors a year later.

It opened for more Western visitors in February, when tourists from the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Australia crossed the border from China. It stopped Tourism weeks later Without saying why.

Some travel agencies are skeptical of Vonson’s attractiveness to foreigners. “It is unlikely to be a major draw for most Western tourists,” says G -N -Beard.

“Main sites such as Pyongyang, DMZ and other brutal or communist landmarks will continue to be the main highlights for international visitors after the broader tourism has resumed.”

However, Elliot Davis, director of Uri Tours, says North Korea has a “niche call” for travelers attracted by unconventional destinations.

“It is intriguing to experience something as familiar as a beach resort that is shaped in the unique cultural context of North Korea.”

KCNA described the development of Wonsan as “a great, favorable event throughout the country” and called it a “prelude to the new era” in tourism.

It was initially planned to open in October 2019, but came across delays in construction before the pandemic impact.

Kim attended a ceremony to celebrate his completion on June 24, accompanied by his daughter Kim Ju Ae and his wife, Ra Sol Ju. He celebrated the first public appearance of RI after a New Year’s Eve event.

The Russian Ambassador Alexander Masegora and the Embassy’s staff were also present.

Some tour operators expect the resort to be open to Russian tourists, who are currently the only foreign citizens authorized in some parts of the country.

Opening the resort comes As North Korea and Russia have strengthened their partnership before the sanctions from the West.

North Korea has He sent troops to fight for Russia as it invaded Ukraine.
