Oregon firefighters compete to save Doerner’s fir – one of the tallest and most old trees in the world – from a fire that has been burning since Saturday.
The giant Fir, 325 feet tall (99 m) and calculated at the age of 450, has already lost about 50 feet to the flame, which can endanger its position in the global height ranking, employees say.
With a more hot and dry forecast for the Oregon coast, firefighters struggle to extinguish the fire.
Officials have discussed some unconventional ways to expose the blast, including construction skeletons, to reach and suppress the flames higher on the tree.
The reason for the explosion remains unknown, although the lightening is excluded.
On Tuesday, the infrared drone did not find active flames or smoke in the top of the tree, but it found heat inside the cavity in the trunk about 280 feet, BBC told the BBC.
D -Ja Harper told ABC News that the fire could affect the stand on the tree in the Global Height ranking.
“We lost about 50 feet of it, just from falling fire and pieces,” she said, noting that 50 feet were lost by the upper burn. “So I don’t know where it will stand afterwards, but it’s still a magnificent tree.”
She also said that there was no risk that the tree would burn completely.
“The tree is so big, there is so much mass that it will take a while to burn it through the tree,” she said.
The Coos Forest Protective Protection Association said the helicopter bucket drops reduced fire activity near the top, while sprinklers and restriction lines were placed around the base. The helicopter remains in standby mode.
