“Our plane crashed. It is upside down.”
These were the words of John Nelson, a passenger on Air Lines Delta’s flight, who had just crashed and transferred while landing at Toronto Pearson International Airport.
All 80 people aboard the flight from Minneapolis – 76 passengers and four crews – have survivedThe airport’s CEO said.
Eighteen passengers were injured. The local paramedics said that three people – a child, a man of his 60s and a woman of the 40s – were seriously injured, but officials said they were not aware of anyone with critical injuries.
“Most people look good. We all go down,” said G -n Nelson in a video posted on Facebook shortly after the crash.
Later, he told CNN that there was no indication of something unusual before landing.
“We slid from the side, then turned on our back,” he said, adding that “there is a large fiery ball on the left side of the plane.”
The passengers were left to hang upside down in their seats.
“We were head down, hanging like bats,” said Peter Kukov, who was also on the plane, in front of CNN.
Nelson said he was able to unbutton himself, pressing himself on the ground.
“Some people were hanging and needed help … And others managed to get off on their own,” he said.
Video footage shared on social media shows that people are getting on the overturned plane, with fire crews spraying it with foam.
The passengers were seen to be assisted by the airplane doors by the airport staff, some of which fled the airplane entrance.
Despite the aircraft transferring to the track, Diane Perry said she had learned about the crash when her family called her while she was online to check her luggage.
“It was somehow ironic that we were at the airport and we didn’t know there was a crash outside,” she told the BBC.
The cause of the crash is not yet clear. Two tracks will remain closed for a few days for investigation and passengers are told to expect some delays.
Nelson still processes what has just happened, telling CNN that is “stressed, nervous, still shaken”.
“It’s amazing that we’re still here.”
