The earthquake struck near Mandalay, which has a population of about 1.5 million.

BUI THU, a BBC journalist who lives in Bangkok, told BBC World Service Newsday that he was home to cook when the initial earthquake happened.

Such rescue efforts were hindered by political turmoil in Myanmar, which was confronted with a brutal civil war, as a military junta took power in a coup in 2021.
