The Palestinian president said he categorically rejects President Donald Trump’s proposal to the United States to take a gas and constantly displace 2.1 million Palestinians living there.
“We will not resolve the rights of our people … to be violated,” said Mahmoud Abbas, warning that Gaza was an “integral part of Palestine” and forced displacement would be a serious violation of international law.
Hamas, whose 15-month war with Israel caused widespread devastation, said Trump’s plan would “put oil on the fire” in the region.
Arab countries also rejected the idea, with Saudi Arabia reiterating that it would not normalize ties with Israel without the creation of a Palestinian state.
The neighboring Egypt, who rejected Trump’s proposal last month that he and Jordan were taking on Gaza residents, emphasized the need for reconstruction “without moving the Palestinians.
It comes two weeks after the start of a fragile ceasefire in Gaza, during which Hamas released some Israeli hostages, which he holds in exchange for Palestinian prisoners in Israeli prisons.
The Israeli military launched a campaign to destroy Hamas in response to an unprecedented cross -border attack on October 7, 2023, which killed about 1,200 people and 251 were taken hostage.
More than 47,540 people have been killed, and since then, 111,600 have been injured in Gaza, according to the health ministry in the territory.
The greater part of the gas population has also been replaced repeatedly, almost 70% of the buildings are evaluated by damaged or destroyed, health, water, sanitary conditions and hygiene systems have collapsed and there is a shortage of food, fuel, medicine and shelter.
President Trump’s first major remarks on the Middle East policy have destroyed decades of thinking about Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
He presented them at the White House on Tuesday night, along with the visit of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
“The US will take over the Gaza Strip and we will also work with it,” he said. “We will own it and be responsible for dismantling all the dangerous unexplored bombs and other weapons of the site, leveling the site and getting rid of the destroyed buildings.”
Trump has considered that about 1.8 million Palestinians living in Gaza will have to be moved to achieve their vision to create the Riviera of the Middle East and said they would be accommodated in Jordan, Egypt and other countries.
Asked if refugees would eventually be allowed to return, he said the “world people” would live in gas before adding “Palestinians” too.
Trump also rejected previous objections from Jordan and Egypt’s leaders to accept refugees, insisting that they would, in the end, “open their hearts and give us the look of the earth we need to do so.”
Netanyahu said that Trump’s proposal could “change the story” and it is worth paying attention to, “adding,” This is the kind of thinking that will reshape the Middle East and bring peace. “
An unnamed senior Israeli official was also quoted that Trump’s ideas exceeded all his “expectations and dreams”.
However, the Palestinian leadership condemned the plan in a statement published on Wednesday.
“These calls are a serious violation of international law,” President Abbas said, adding that “peace and stability will not be reached in the region without the creation of a Palestinian state.”
Abbas leads the rivals of Hamas Fatah and rules parts of the Israeli West coast.
He said that the Palestinians would not “give up on earth, their rights and sacred objects” and that “the Gaza Strip is an integral part of the land of Palestine, along with the West Coast and East Jerusalem.”
Hamas – which is prescribed as a terrorist organization by Israel, USA, the United Kingdom and other countries – said in a statement that Trump “seeks to the United States to occupy the Gaza Strip.”
He warned that his proposal was “aggressive for our people and reasons, would not serve as stability in the region and would only put oil on the fire.”
The Palestinians in Gaza also said the plan was completely off.
“We have suffered for almost a year and a half of attacks and destruction, but we still remain in gas,” a man told the BBC Arabic.
“We would soon die in gas than leave it. We will stay here until we restore it. Trump can do as he wants, but we firmly reject his decisions.”
According to international law, attempts to force the population are strictly prohibited.
The Palestinians are also afraid of the repetition of “Nakba” or “crash” when hundreds of thousands fled or were driven out of their homes during the war, followed by the creation of the State of Israel in 1948.
Many of these refugees found themselves in Gaza, where they and their descendants make up three -quarters of the population. Another 900,000 registered refugees live on the west coast, which Israel occupied during the Middle East war in 1967 with Gaza, while 3.4 million others live in Jordan, Syria and Lebanon, according to the UN.
Israel unilaterally withdrew his troops and settlers from Gaza in 2005, although he maintained control over his shared border, airspace and coastline, giving him effective control over the movement of people and goods. The UN is still examining a gas for Israel -occupied territory because of the level of control that Israel has.
The Saudi Foreign Ministry said the kingdom “unequivocally rejected” Trump’s proposal for post -war gas and reiterated that he would continue his efforts to establish an independent Palestinian state and “do not establish diplomatic relations with Israel without it.”
“Achieving lasting and simply peace is impossible without the Palestinian people receiving their legal rights,” she added.
Following the talks in Cairo, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelati said he agreed with the Palestinian body Prime Minister Mohammed Mustafa about “the importance of the movement forward with the early recovery projects … without the Palestinians to leave the Gaza Strip, especially with their commitment to their land And refusing to leave it. “
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said that moving Palestinians from gas to any form is “unacceptable”, adding: “It’s absurd to even look at it.”
Western governments also expressed anxiety about any forced displacement.
The French Foreign Ministry said it “will be a serious violation of international law, an attack on the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinians, but also a major obstacle to the decision of two countries and a major destabilizing factor for our close partners Egypt and Jordan, as well as for the way for the the whole region “.
The United Kingdom Foreign Minister David Lamie said, “We have always been clear in our belief that we should look for two countries. We need to see Palestinians who can live and prosper in their homeland, in Gaza, on the west coast.”
