Passenger jet and army helicopter collide and crash in Washington

The American Airlines flight carrying dozens of passengers collided with a military helicopter as he approached the Washington National Airport DC Ronald Reagan.

The aircraft then crashed into the Potomak River, staff said, and boats and divers search the water for survivors.

The Bombardier CRJ700 regional aircraft – carrying 60 passengers and four crew members – collided with the helicopter as it approached the track around 9:00 pm (02:00 GMT) on Wednesday.

The plane came from Wichita, Kansas, according to the airline.

The catavian plane has split in half into the Potomak River with boats and divers now looking for people, according to reports in the United States.

Three US army soldiers were aboard the Black Hawk military helicopter, who was confronted with the aircraft, a defense official said.

The helicopter had taken off from Fort Belvoire in Virginia.

US President Donald Trump said he was “fully informed of the horrific incident”.

“Thank you for the incredible job done by our first answers. I follow the situation and will provide more details when they arise,” he said in a statement.

The departments and landings are stopped at the airport as the emergency staff responded to the incident, writes the airport in a publication at X.

The Federal Aviation Administration said it was investigating.
