Passengers on a flight to American Airlines were evacuated to the asphalt at an airport in Colorado when a fire burst into the plane, sending smoke in the air.
No injuries were reported in the incident.
Evacuation footage has shown that the passengers huddled on the wing of the Boeing aircraftoneae, some holding bags, with flames burning near the bottom of the plane.
The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said passengers used inflatable slides to get to the ground safe in Denver International Airport. The agency said it would investigate the cause of the incident.
The flight took off from nearby Colorado Springs and was on the way to Dallas Fort Worth in Texas International Airport, FAA told a statement to the BBC.
The plane diverted to Denver around 5:15 pm local time (23:15 GMT) after the crew reported “engine vibrations,” FAA said.
After the flight landed, it ignited as it was tied to the asphalt at the airport.
American Airlines said the aircraft has 172 passengers on board, along with six crew members. They were all safely evacuated, the company said.
It says the aircraft is Boeing 737-800 and has experienced an “engine-related problem”.
