Poland, closest to the opening of conflict after World War II, warns PM

At least three Russian drones were removed from Polish and other NATO aircraft in Poland’s airspace during night attacks against Ukraine, Polish prime minister said.

Donald Tusk told the deputies, whom Poland has recorded 19 invasions in drones, with some flying deep enough to temporarily close four airports, including Warsaw’s main hub.

“This situation brings us the closest to open a conflict after World War II,” he said. This is the first time the Russian drones have been removed over the territory of a NATO member after the full -scale invasion of Ukraine in Moscow in 2022.

There were no “plans” to direct facilities on the territory of Poland, the Ministry of Defense of Russia said.

“The maximum scope of Russian drones, which are claimed to have passed in Poland, do not exceed 700 km (435 miles),” the ministry said, adding that he was “ready” to consult with the Polish Ministry of Defense.

Russia’s temporary accusation in Poland said that Warsaw had not provided evidence that the drones were of Russian origin.

Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski warned that the last attack was “an extremely dangerous precedent for Europe”, while Foreign Minister Andri Sibiha said it shows that Russian President Vladimir Putin “continues to escalate, expand the war.”

US President Donald Trump wrote on the social media platform TRUTH SOCIAL on Wednesday: “What is it with Russia, breaking Poland’s airspace with drones? Here we are!”

Earlier, a White House employee told the BBC that Trump was tracking reports from Poland and had plans to talk to Polish President Carol Naroki during the day.

Turning to Polish legislators on Wednesday, Tusk said three – or maybe four – drones were removed overnight.

He said the Polish authorities have no information that suggests that someone was injured or died “as a result of Russian actions.”

“The fact that those drones, which pose a threat to security, were overthrown, changed the political situation.

“I have no reason to say we are on the edge of the war, but the line is crossed and is unmatched than before.

Separately, a spokesman for the interior ministry said the authorities had discovered seven drones and the remains of an unidentified site on sites across the country.

Carolina Galeka told a press conference that five of the drones and the remains of the unidentified site were found in various places in Lublin province in Eastern Poland, bordering Belarus and Ukraine.

Two of the drone was found in central and northern Poland, much further than borders, she said.

A map shows an area where a drone attack happened overnight. With Poland, Russia, Belarus and Ukraine with a label. The label where the drone was found, Czosnówka, is a village in Eastern Poland, about 40 km (25 miles) from the border with Belarus. There are also labels to show where four airports were temporarily closed in Poland, including two in Warsaw due to the drone.

Tusk, who convened an emergency meeting on Wednesday morning, requested that Article 4 of the NATO Treaty officially launched emergency talks between Union members.

Poland is a NATO Member State – which binds the US and many European nations along with collective defense.

Both Tusk and Polish President Carol Naroki said they were in “regular contact” with NATO Secretary General Mark Rute, who praised a “very successful reaction” by the Union.

“The security of our home country is our highest priority and requires close cooperation,” said President Naroki at X.

Ruth added that the situation was being investigated as he condemned Russia’s “reckless behavior”, whether intentional.

Belarus, a close Russian ally, claims that the drones have entered Polish airspace accidentally after their navigation systems have stuck.

In a statement made to the BBC, the Polish Ministry of Defense said: “The drones that could pose a threat were removed in advance.

“Polish and NATO aircraft, including the F-35, F-16 and MI-24, MI-17 and Black Hawk Helicopters, were sent to the intended work area. The ground-based air defense systems and radar intelligence systems were also placed on maximum signal.”

The Polish military also thanked NATO and the Netherlands for the deployment of F-35 fighter jets.
