Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said his government would temporarily suspend the right of migrants arriving in Poland across his border with Belarus to apply for asylum.
Tusk made a message following the controversial bill that would allow the Polish authorities to suspend this right within 60 days at a time, was signed by President Angy Duda.
Tusk said his government would adopt the law “without a moment of delay” while Duda said the changes were needed to strengthen the security of the country’s borders.
The law, however, is criticized by rights groups, including Human Rights Watch, who said the EU should take court action against Poland if implemented.
The group called on the country’s parliament last month to reject the bill, stating that “it is flying to the EU international and obligations” and may “be able to” effectively seal the border of Poland-Berlarus, where the Polish authorities are already participating in illegal and forcibly discounts. “
The government has said that the suspension will be applied only to people who pose a threat to the State Security, such as large groups of aggressive migrants who are trying to storm the border, before.
Exceptions will be made to unaccompanied minors, pregnant women, elderly or malaise, anyone exposed to a “real risk of serious harm” by returning citizens of countries accused of conducting the instrumentalization of migration – such as Belarus
Tusk has rejected criticism from human rights groups.
“Nobody talks about violating human rights, the right to asylum. We are talking about the fact that we do not provide applications to people who illegally cross the border into groups organized by Lukashenko,” he said in October.
Since 2021, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Finland have been watching a huge increase in the number of people passing illegally in their countries from Belarus and Russia.
Polish authorities have sent thousands of troops and border guards to the police his border with Belarus and have built a 5.5 meters high steel fence along the 186 km border, where sometimes several thousand migrants are left to delays.
Right groups estimate more than a hundred people have died on the boundaries between Belarus and Poland, Lithuania and Latvia since 2021.
The EU EU and European Commission has accused the Belarusian and Russian authorities of arming migration to create a new route to the EU to destabilize the block.
