The Portuguese and German authorities began a new search for Madeleine McCan in Portugal, nearly two decades after its disappearance.

Madeleine was three years old when he disappeared from an apartment complex in Praya to Luz in Algarve during a family vacation on May 3, 2007.

The disappearance of the British young child has sparked a police investigation across Europe and is one of the most profitable cases of missing persons in Europe.

On Monday, Portuguese police confirmed the search by commissioning German prosecutors between the resort, where Madeleine disappeared and where the main suspect by German investigators was staying at the time. The site is reported to cover 21 land plots.

The search – which covers the Municipality of Lagos, near Pray to Luz in a busy tourist area – should continue until Friday.

Tuesday morning a Portuguese fire machine and Four vehicles carrying German police arrived at the wanted place – located about 3.5 miles from the Ocean Club resort, where Madeleine and her family were staying.

The roads leading to the site – which is significant and most closed – have been closed since Monday, while the focus of the day seems to be on discarded buildings near the shore.

The team clears the grass and vegetation around the site of search, as well as views similar structures well. A large blue tent was erected in the same area.

About 30 German officers are expected to participate in demand.

Charlie Hedges, the former chief of missing children at the National Crime Agency, who has worked in some of the most profitable cases in the UK, said it seems that investigators are “casting the web a little wider” with the latest demand.

“It seems a little widespread (that) they are looking for something specific,” he told the BBC. “If it was firmly lead, you would think it would be defined in one place.”

However, he said they must have had enough excuse to acquire search orders.

“They will have to receive approval for funding from Germany and this should be a very significant price with the number of resources and work abroad and the rest of it.”

Madeleine was three years old when she disappeared

Madeleine’s case was initially led by the Portuguese authorities with the help of Sofia police.

The German investigators took the lead from 2020, when they identified the German national Christian Brookner as their main suspect.

Currently, the 48-year-old is serving a sentence in Germany for raping a 72-year-old American tourist in Portugal in 2005. He was to be released in September, but this could be pushed back in early 2026 if he did not pay a fine he owed.

The German authorities fear that if Brusner is not accused of anything, he will disappear after his release.

The German police suspects him in murder. The British police continues to treat the case as an investigation into missing persons.

Brukner has repeatedly denied any involvement and no charges have been filed against him.

The Portuguese authorities have also cited Brukner as an official suspect, or Arguido. They said they would convey any evidence seized in the last search of the German authorities.

Met police, which said this week that he was aware of the search of German police in Portugal, continues his investigation into Madeleine’s disappearance.

The case, known as Grange Operation, has been going on since 2011 and has been around 13.3 million pounds so far.

Officials have not disclosed if they are conducting this last search in Portugal based on some new information, seeing that they seem to be the last look in places where evidence or body could be hidden.

The German police have a European order that has been approved by Portuguese prosecutors to allow them to search private land.

The last search took place two years ago and was focused around a reservoir where Madeleine was last seen.

Brukner, who spent time in the area between 2000 and 2017, has been found to have photos and videos near the tank.

Hedges said that the most search area could be a “gap they are trying to include”. He suggested that the forthcoming release of Brukner was “probably drive things” and the police were needed to “hit” additional evidence.

At night, Madeleine disappeared, her parents were at dinner with friends at a restaurant for a short walk, while their three-year-old daughter and her younger brothers and sisters were asleep in the apartment on the ground floor.

Her mother Kate found that she was missing around 10:00 pm.

A German documentary in 2022 found evidence that Brukner has occasionally worked at Ocean Club as a master, while German prosecutors also linked their data on mobile phones and selling cars with their case against him.

Last month, Madeleine’s parents celebrated the 18th anniversary of her disappearance, saying that “their determination not to leave a stone turned over was steadfast.”
