Former Ukrainian speaker of parliament Andry Parubius was shot dead in Lviv, Ukrainian authorities said.
Police have received reports of firing in the Frankivsk neighborhood in Hunting, West Ukraine, around local time on Saturday. It is unclear whether the perpetrator was arrested.
The 54-year-old Parubi has risen to be known as part of the Maidan movement of Ukraine, which is advocating for closer ties with the European Union (EU) and has taken down the pro-Russian former President Viktor Yanukovych in 2014.
Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski described him as a “terrible murder” and sent his condolences.
It remains unclear who is behind the attack. Confirmed reports suggest that Parubius was shot dead repeatedly by a shooter on an electronic bicycle dressed as a courier.
The Ukraine National Police, the LVI Regional Police and the Security Service are investigating the murder.
In a statement, Zelenski wrote to Telegram: “The Minister of the Interior of Ukraine Ihor Klamenko and General Prosecutor Ruslan Kravenchenko had just reported the first known circumstances of the horrible murder in LVIV. Andry Parubius was killed.
“All the necessary forces and resources are unfolded to investigate and find the killer.”
