Putin is floating an idea for the UN-LED government in Ukraine

Vladimir Putin suggested that Ukraine had to be temporarily put under the UN control to choose what he called a more “competent” government.

This is the Russian president’s last attempt to challenge the legitimacy of the Kiev government.

Ukraine has accused Putin of offering “crazy” ideas to slow down a more movement to a peace deal – to be supported by US President Donald Trump.

The White House insisted that the rule of Ukraine will be resolved by its constitution and people.

Putin’s remarks come when the United States seeks to end their ceasefire in the full -scale war with Ukraine, which is already in its fourth year.

On Tuesday, the White House said the two countries agreed to a limited truce in the Black Sea.

However, Russia then presented a list of conditions, including the raising of some Western sanctions, which caused fears that Moscow is trying to derail any steps towards ceasing the fire.

Speaking to the crew of a nuclear submarine in the distant northern Russian city of Murmansk, Putin said the temporary administration under the UN auspices could be discussed “with the United States, with European countries and of course with our partners and friends.”

“This would be in order to hold democratic elections, bring the power of a capable government trusted by people, and then start with IT conversations for a peace agreement and sign legal documents,” he added.

Moscow says the current Ukrainian bodies are illegitimate, as President Volodimir Zelenski has remained in power outside the end of his term and is therefore not a valid negotiating partner.

But Zelenski remained because the elections were legally detained by martial law and practically the chaos of war.

It would be almost impossible to hold a valid election with more than five million Ukrainian citizens, displaced abroad and many hundreds of thousands of home that fight on the front line.

By calling for elections, Putin is trying to bring doubts that President Zelenski is a legitimate interlocutor in all peace talks. The White House has already echoed this story.

And if Putin manages to force elections, he may hope that this will split and dispel Ukraine as he reaches the battlefield.

Putin said this proposal was just one of the many options, but indicated that there were international UN control precedents such as Eastern Timor and parts of the former Yugoslavia.

The Chief of Staff of Zelenski Andriai Jermak responded to Putin’s remarks, saying that Russia was trying to stop the movements of peace and chose to continue the war.

Meanwhile, a US national security spokesman told the Reuters News Agency that governance in Ukraine is determined by the Constitution and people.

At the same meeting, the Russian leader said that Moscow had a “strategic initiative” all over the front line in the war and “there are reasons to believe that we can finish the” Ukrainian forces.

But although the frequent proclamations of progress in fighting, Russia has only made very slow and limited progress in the acquisition of territory in Eastern Ukraine.

Putin’s comments come after a meeting on Thursday between Zelenski and European allies in Paris, French President Emmanuel Macron said that France and the United Kingdom are proposing plans for reassurance in Ukraine.

Russia began a full -scale invasion of its neighbor in February 2022.
