Rwanda has shortened diplomatic ties with Belgium, saying it has been “consistently undermined” by the European nation during the ongoing conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Brussels calls for European countries to sanction Rwanda for their support for M23, a rebel group in the center of the Congo crisis.

Authorities in Kigali, the capital of Rwanda, gave Belgian diplomats 48 hours to leave the country.

Belgium, which is the former colonial power, said it would respond to these measures and indicate Rwanda’s decision “disproportionate”.

Despite the allegations of bodies like UN and us, Rwanda denied supporting the M23.

In his statement on Monday, Kigali accused Brussels of trying to “maintain his neo -colonial delusions.”

“Belgium has apparently taken countries in a regional conflict and continues to mobilize systematically against Rwanda in various forums, using lies and manipulation to provide an unjustified hostile opinion of Rwanda, in an attempt to destabilize Rwanda, and in the region,” the statement said.

Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Ptro responded to Rwanda’s measures on social media, saying, “This is disproportionate and shows that when we do not agree with Rwanda, they prefer not to participate in dialogue.”

Prevot said Rwanda’s diplomats in Belgium would be declared “staff not grab”.

This declaration can lead to the elimination of diplomatic status and often leads to expulsion or withdrawal of the recognition of envoys.
