A clash between a tourist bus and a truck near Yellowstone National Park was killed by seven people and wounds eight others on Thursday.

Police were alerted to the local time crash at 19:15 (02:15 GMT) when Chevy’s pickup truck and a minibus carrying 14 tourists collided on a highway in East Aidaho, State police said.

Both vehicles ignited. The truck driver and six of the passengers in the van were killed.

Police are still investigating the cause. The highway at which the crash took place, leads to the park, which is now entering its peak tourist season.

A photo from a passerby shows smoke and flames near the crushed hood of the truck.

The witness, who took the photo, local resident Roger Meryl, told the US partner of BBC News CBS News that he was on his way home when he saw the scene developing.

Both vehicles were set on fire, he said, and observers were trying to take care of the survivors of the highway.

“This is a very dangerous highway because it leads to the main entrance of Yellowstone National Park,” he said. “Extremely busy.”

The highway was closed for seven hours as the emergency teams were casualties and cleared the site of the crash, about 16 miles from the entrance to Yellowstone.

Police said the local Corron cabinet will release the names of the dead after family members have been notified.

Yellowstone, the oldest US National Park, covers nearly 3500 square miles in three states, including Idaho, Wyoming and Montana.

It attracts an average of four million tourists every year, with the greater part of the visitors coming between May and September, according to the National Park Service.
