Six people were killed after a lightweight plane belonging to a medical charity crashed in the Capitol of Kenya, Nairobi, according to a local employee.

AMREF charity flying doctors said the Sesna plane took off from Wilson Airport on Thursday afternoon and was on the way to Hargeis in Somalia when it crashed and burst into flames in a residential building in the Nairi region in Nairi.

Kiambu County Commissioner Henry Voufla said six people on the plane were killed, including doctors, nurses and the pilot – as well as two others on earth, while others were seriously injured.

Investigators were sent to the scene of the crash to determine his cause.

The aircraft lost both radio and radar contact with air traffic control just three minutes after departure, the Civil Aviation Authority in Kenya reported.

There were four crew officers aboard and AMREF, the charity said.

“At that time, we are fully cooperating with the relevant aviation authorities and emergency response teams to determine the facts surrounding the situation,” AMREF Executive Director Stephen Gitau said in a statement.

The Kenyan Defense Forces and the National Police Service are located in place to conduct search and recovery operations.

Patricia Kombo, an eyewitness, told the BBC that she was in a taxi with her friends who head to Giberi when they heard a strong blow and a red flash in front of them.

“Before I could pick up my phone to record that the lightning was gone, and the smoke was twisted. Then we heard people scream and run, and so we finished their journey.

“Then we found it a plane crash and we saw the sunken hole that the crash created in the ground,” she said.

On a separate incident, a train and bus collided with a railway crossing near the town of Nayasha, Central Kenya, killing at least four people, according to the Reuters agency, citing a Red Cross worker.

The Kenya Pipeline Company, whose bus was involved in the incident, said it was carrying a staff who was completing its morning shift at one of its training centers and that all injured staff were taken to a hospital for treatment.
