A 56-year-old man is investigating himself in South Korea on suspicion of a deadly fire, which killed 30 people.

The man who was not baptized was performing a rite of the ancestors from a family grave on a hill in Usseng County, North Gionsang Province, at that time.

He is booked – but has not been arrested – and will be summoned for questioning after investigating the site is completed. He denies the allegations.

On Sunday, employees said the main fires were finally undergoing full control – 10 days after they began, causing widespread damage to buildings, including historical temples.

Investigators are reported to have talked to the daughter of a suspect that he was told that the fire had started when her father was trying to burn branches of trees hanging over the graves with a cigarette lighter.

According to the Korea Forest Service, the fires burned more than 48,000 hectares – equivalent to about 80% of the capital Seoul.

They also destroyed approximately 4,000 structures, including homes, factories and a number of national treasures.

Goun Temple – UNESCO World Heritage Site – was among the temples destroyed in the flame. It was built in 618 AD. And he was one of the largest in the countryside.

Most of the victims were the people of the 60s and 70s.

Although the main fire is under control, the smaller ones continue to return, authorities say.

Nourished by strong and dry winds, the fires spread to several cities and counties.

Unjustified warm weather, dry conditions and pine forests in the region also helped to feed the flames.

An investigation into police, firefighters and forest management will be conducted next week.

The position of President Han Duck-SU said the government would provide financial support for those who were displaced by the fires.
