A landslide died at least 1000 people in the remote Mara Mountains in West Sudan, according to the armed group of Liberation Movement/Army of Sudan.

The days of heavy rain triggered the landslide on Sunday, which left only one survivor and “leveled” much of the village of Tarasin, the group said.

The movement appealed the humanitarian aid from the United Nations and other regional and international organizations.

Many northern Darfour residents have sought asylum in the Mara Mountains, after a war between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary forces for rapid support (RSF) forced them from their homes.

The governor of the Darfur army, Mini Past, called the landslide “Humanitarian Tragedy”.

“We appeal to international humanitarian organizations to urgently intervene and provide support and assistance at this critical moment, as the tragedy is more than what our people can bear alone,” he said in a statement cited by the AFP news agency.

The photos show two gullies on the side of a mountain that approach at a lower level where the village of Tarasin was.

The Civil War, which broke out in April 2023, between the Sudanese army and the RSF, has flooded the country in starvation and led to accusations of genocide in the western Darfur region.

Estimates for the death issue of the Civil War vary significantly, but an US employee estimated that up to 150,000 people had been killed last year, as hostilities began in 2023. About 12 million escaped from their homes.

Fractions of the Sudan Liberation Movement/Army, which controls the area in which the landslide happened, promised to fight with the Sudanese military against the RSF.

Many Darfuri believe that RSF and allied militias have waged a war aimed at turning an ethnic mixed region into an Arab domain.
