EPAThe Australian government has been said by Moscow that one of its citizens in Russian is still alive.
Oscar Jenkins, a 32-year-old teacher, was captured last year while fighting for Ukraine.
“The Australian government has received confirmation from Russia that Oscar Jenkins is also alive in custody,” Penny Wong said in a statement by Foreign Minister on Wednesday.
Earlier, there were reports that Jenkins had been killed while he was captured, with the Australian government referring to “serious problems” for its well -being.
“We are still serious concerns about Jenkins as a prisoner,” the Wong statement added.
He also called on Russia to release him and repeat Australia’s position that the Russian Federation was obliged to refer to all prisoners of war in accordance with international humanitarian law.
Military prisoners are protected from all acts of violence or intimidation by the Geneva Convention.
Earlier, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the government is “urgently seeking” confirmation that Jenkins is alive.
Australia’s ambassador to Australia was quoted by the Australian broadcast corporation, saying it was “good news”, but called on Moscow to provide “video evidence” for his well -being.
It is believed that G -n Jenkins is the first Australian to be kept as a prisoner while fighting for Ukraine.
Last December, a video appeared showing d -Jenkins, his hands tied, struck in his face and questioned by Russian forces.
He explains that he is a teacher and also a soldier who lives in both Australia and Ukraine.
They ask him if he is paid to fight in Ukraine.
