The Dutch government collapsed after Geert Wilders withdrew its final party from the ruling coalition after a migration dispute.
Prime Minister Dick Drove confirmed that he was retiring on Tuesday and offered the resignation of King Willem-Alexander’s cabinet.
In television remarks after a meeting of the Emergency Cabinet, Driver said that Wilders’ decision to withdraw the support of his PVV party was “irresponsible and unnecessary”.
“As for me, that shouldn’t have happened,” he added.
The governing coalition was available for less than one year.
The order that led to his collapse came after Wilders insisted on 10 additional asylum measures, including freezing applications, suspending foster centers and limiting family unification.
Schoof had made an appeal at the leaders of the coalition parties on Tuesday morning, but the meeting continued only one minute before Wilders came out, terminating the coalition.
“There is no signature for our asylum plans. PVV is leaving the coalition,” Wilders told X.
There was shock and anger among political leaders, many of whom stated that several of Wilders’ demands were similar to the policies that were already in the coalition agreement and that they would not stand on the PVV path to apply them.
Many of the additional proposals presented by Wilders were rejected during coalition negotiations due to legal problems.
Wilders’ decision ended the restless ruling coalition, which was born in July 2024 after months of political dispute after the election of the previous year.
Its anti-immigration, the far right PVV was the largest party. The other members were the conservative-liberal VVD, the civil movement of farmers (BBB) and the new social contract for centrist.
From the very beginning, the coalition seemed marriage to the convenience, characterized by the struggle and seemed to be struggling to push any of the policies that she had proudly encouraged.
After his collapse, Wilders’ former coalition partners have accused him of engineering. VVD leader Dilin Jesilgoz said this move was “super irresponsible”, adding: “It wasn’t a refuge at all.”
“I think Wilders betrayed the Netherlands,” said Deputy Minister Mona Kiizer of the BBC.
But it seems that Wilders feels strengthened. On Tuesday, he told reporters that he intended to become Prime Minister of the Netherlands, “and guarantees that PVV is becoming more enthusiastic than ever in the next election.”
Sandra Flippen, ABN Amro Bank’s chief economist, said the immediate economic impact of the cabinet collapse seems minimal, since in the 11th months of the government, the government “barely made any specific plans.”
The polls show that the end and green-left parties are in shea and neck, with migration and life problems that nourish political instability throughout Europe.
Wilders wanted the government to collapse, as the support of his Freedom Party continues to be dropped in the ballot box, according to Armida Van Ridge, head of the European program at Chatham House.
With the NATO summit, which is to be held in the Hague at the end of the month, Schoof ministers will strive to remain in power in the capacity of the viewer until a date for the Netherlands will return to the ballot box – probably in the fall, according to Dutch media.
In the Dutch political system, becoming Prime Minister requires the formation of a majority in parliament in 150 places.
Even if Wilders again exceeds the expectations of political professionals, his decision to collapse the government is regarded as reckless – and perceptions he puts a personal ambition over national stability can further complicate his ability to form alliances after the next election.
Countries that have been reluctant or refused to enter the government with Wilders after the last election will probably find this type of partnership even less attractive now.
In addition, by overthrowing the coalition on the refuge, Wilders is likely to put him at the center of his upcoming election campaign.
Given that his party has been responsible for asylum and immigration for almost a year, there is no guarantee that such gambling will pay off.
