The EU plans to end the import of Russian gas by the end of 2027.

The European Commission publishes a “roadmap”, outlining its plans to terminate Europe’s reading of Russian energy in the coming years.

According to the plans, the import of all Russian gases and liquefied natural gas to the EU Member States will be banned by the end of 2027.

“Will we no longer allow Russia to arm the energy against us … We will no longer help indirectly fill the wars of the (Kremlin),” the European Energy Commissioner Dan Jogensen said at a press conference in Strasbourg on Tuesday.

In response to plans, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told the Reuters Agency on Tuesday that Europe is “shooting in the leg”.

A set of legislative proposals will be submitted in June with a request from all EU Member States to make “national plans” to terminate the import of Russian gases, nuclear fuel and oil, according to the European Commission.

EU Member States must submit strategies on plans to replace Russian oil imports by the end of 2027.

The countries were also asked to outline strategies to end Russia’s relying on uranium, enriched uranium and other nuclear materials.

The EU hopes to move away from Russian gas by “increasing energy efficiency, accelerating the unfolding of renewable energy and diversifying supplies,” the European Commission said.

While EU addiction on Russian oil, gas and nuclear fuels decreases significantly after Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, the block still imports a significant amount of energy from Russia.

According to the report, EU gas imports from Russia decreased from 45% in 2021 to 19% in 2024.

The roadmap also includes plans to direct Russia from “shady fleets” – oil tankers with unclear property and insurance that Russia uses to maintain oil exports and to bypass sanctions.
