The first day of a conclave in a minute

The first vote of the conclave – the secret process of choosing a new pope – failed to make a decision.

After a long wait, the black smoke appeared from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel around 9:00 pm local time – which means that 133 cardinals inside did not manage to choose a new pontiff.

The crowds were gathered in their tens of thousands of St. Peter Square for the first vote of a conclave – the results of which took more than two hours to announce.

The cardinals will return tomorrow to the closed door Sixel for more circles of voting.

Laura Gosi of the BBC was in the Vatican City all day with the crowds waiting.
