A landlord in Illinois, who fatally stabbed a six-year-old Palestinian-American boy and severely wound his mother, was sentenced to 53 years in prison.

73-year-old Joseph Chua was convicted in February for crimes of murder and hatred of Vadi Alfaumi’s death and the wounding of his mother, Hanan Shahin in 2023 shortly after the war in Israel in Israel.

The family was tenants at the Tsuba House in Plainfield, about 64 km (40 miles) from Chicago. Prosecutors said he directed them to their Muslim faith.

Chaba pleaded innocent, but the jurors condemned him after discussing less than 90 minutes.

Vadi Alfiumi’s big uncle, Mahmoud Youssef, told the court on Friday that no sentence would “justify” the boy’s death, according to NBC News.

“On the day he was killed, his father had memories, there were plans for his son,” he continued, saying that Tsuba “” had no right to take them. “

Appearing in a red prison uniform, the slim and fragile look condemned, refused to speak in his own name.

The process included testimony from Alfuyumi’s mother, who described the meeting in painful details, and from Tsuba’s ex -wife, who said he had grown up from the war.

Hanan Shahin testified during the trial that Tsuba told her “You as a Muslim should die,” according to Reuters.

On the day of the attack he made his way to the home of the Alfaumi family., who rented rooms from him and attacked them with a knife, prosecutors said.

He stabbed his mother over a dozen times, prosecutors said, then turned to the boy and stabbed him 26 times.

The evidence during the process included photos of a graphic crime and police, which said they had found Czuba outside the house after the attack with his body and hands covered with blood.

A deadly attack has received national attention and renewed concerns of Islamophobia, Antimuslim discrimination, and antipathian prejudices.

The young boy had celebrated his sixth birthday just a few weeks before he was killed.

“He loved his family, his friends. He loved football, loved basketball,” said the CEO of the Chicago office of the US-Islamic Relations (Cair), Ahmed Rehabilis, said at that time.
