The man from Minnesota accused of shooting legislators to face federal charges

The suspect, accused of fatal firing by a Minnesota MP and her husband in a weapon in June, has been charged with six federal charges, the state prosecutor said.

The allegations against Vance Belter, 57, include lurking and murder, which prosecutors have said can be executed with a maximum sentence for life in prison or death penalty.

After a two-day manipulator, Mr Belter was arrested on June 16 for his alleged role in the killings of Minnesota legislator Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark Hortman.

Boelter remains in custody in Minnesota, where he is also facing state charges. He has not yet entered a legal basis.

According to prosecutors, Belter lurks and fired in two other state MPs – John Hoffman, Senator of the State of Minnesota, and his wife Yvet Hoffman – in a separate shooting. Prosecutors said he also had plans for a larger attack, which police thwarted.

“Vance Belter plans and made a night of terror that shook Minnesota to its base,” said US lawyer Joseph X Thompson in a written statement.

“He committed purposeful political killings they like, of which they were never seen in Minnesota,” he said.

Prosecutors also released a letter saying that Belter admitted that he was a weapon and claims that Minessota Governor Tim Walz asked him to kill American senators Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith for political purposes. Prosecutors and Walz say the claim is completely false.

According to court documents, Boelter examined the victims and their families, preparing for the attacks on June 14.

Belter approached Hoffman’s home in Champlin, Minnesota, disguised as a police officer, and when they answered the door, they shot Senator Hoffman nine times and his wife Yvet Hoffman eight times, prosecutors said. He then tried to shoot their daughter, Hope Hoffman.

Boelter then traveled to the homes of two other Minnesota -selected staff, who were both far away before driving to Hortmans house and fatally shooting the couple, prosecutors said.

He was arrested two days later near his family home in a wooded village west of Minneapolis.
