The death rate after deadly floods strikes the Nigerian city of Skaw on Thursday, has increased to over 200, staff said.

500 people have still disappeared in the city in the northern central State of Niger as the search mission continues.

The deputy chairman of the local authority of Kukika, Musa Kimboku, told the BBC that the rescue efforts had ceased because the authorities no longer believe that someone could still be alive.

The floods, which are said to have been the highest in the area for 60 years, passed through the cities of Tifin Maza and Angvan Husheva after torrential rain.

In an effort to prevent diseases in the area, the authorities will soon begin to dig corpses buried underground, said the head of the Mukhat Muhamad Aliyu district.

Retelling scenes of a crashThe locals told the BBC that they had seen their homes and family members were washed.

A man, Adam Yusuf, lost his wife and a newborn baby.

“I watched helplessly water my family washed. I survived because I could swim,” he told the BBC.

Another resident, Saliu Suleiman, said the floods had left him homeless and destroyed some of his money from the monetary business.

“I lost at least $ 1,500 from the floods. These were the proceeds from the sale of my farm the previous day. I was considering returning to the room to get it, but the pressure of the water scared me.”

On Sunday, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) announced that the process of providing the assistance packages to the affected people has begun.

Agency Added to a Facebook post That roads and bridges were also affected by the flood, which has an effect on the local economy and traffic.

The Nigerian Red Cross also released a statement on Friday Saying that floods have caused “significant loss of life and widespread suffering.”

Floods are not uncommon during the Nigerian rainy season, which lasts from April to October.

In 2024, Nigeria experienced a flood of heavy rain, causing death and kicked people out of their homes.

There was also a heavy flood in 2022, when more than 600 people died and 1.3 million were displaced.
