ReutersThe Israeli military says two soldiers were killed in an attack on the occupied west coast, as its forces continue a major operation against Palestinian armed groups in the northern part of the territory.
Another eight soldiers were injured when a Palestinian arms opened fire at a checkpoint in the village of Tayasir, 2 km (1.2 miles) north of Tubas, a military statement said. The attacker is shot dead, he said.
Hamas and Palestinian Islamic jihad praised the attack in response to the Israeli operation in Tubas, Jenin and Tulkarm, but none of them said they were behind it.
In the meantime, a UN employee has warned the situation at Jenin’s refugee camp to head in a “catastrophic direction”.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced a large-scale operation to “win terrorism” in Jenin on January 21, three days after the cessation of fire in the Gaza Strip came into force. The operation was expanded to Tulkarm and Tubas last week.
The Palestinian Health Ministry says the Israeli forces have killed 70 Palestinians on the West coast, including occupied East Jerusalem since the beginning of the year.
The figure includes the 25 reported killed in the Jenin area and 13 in the Tuba and Tulkarm regions in the last two weeks.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said about 55 “terrorists” died and arrested 380 requested persons from the west coast in January.
The Israeli media reported that the Palestinian, who was attacking Tuesday in Tayasir, was able to sneak to a military post to the checkpoint before opening a M16 firefighter at soldiers located there.
The soldiers fired back and a battle with a gun continued for several minutes before the attacker was killed, they said.
IDF called the two soldiers who were killed as SGT Maj ofer Yung, 39, and SGT Maj Avraham Friedman, 43.
Two of the eight wounded soldiers were in a serious condition in hospital, the announcement said.
During a visit to the accident later on Tuesday, the head of IDF, Lt Gen Herzi Halevi, promised to “investigate and conclude” from what he described as a “serious attack”.
“We will increase the activity of the fight against terrorism and expand it in additional areas,” he added.
Hamas praised what he described as “a heroic and quality operation performed by a Palestinian resistance fighter in Taysir, saying that he shows that” the crimes of occupation and its aggression against the northern west coast will not remain unpunished. “
ReutersOn Monday, Palestinian President spokesman Mahmoud Abbas claims that the Israeli operation is part of a broader effort aimed at “shifting citizens and ethnic cleansing.”
Speaking to reporters in Geneva on Tuesday, Juliet Tuma from the United Nations Agency for Palestinian Refugees (Unrwa) has warned of a worsening situation in the refugee camp Jenin.
Hundreds of Israeli security forces, backed by helicopters, drones and armored bulldozers, have been attacking in the camp, long regarded as a fortress by armed groups.
“Large parts of the camp were completely destroyed in a series of detonations from the Israeli forces. It is believed that 100 houses were destroyed or severely damaged,” said Da Tuma.
“This detonation, which happened on Sunday, was when the kids had to return to school,” she added.
IDF said on Sunday that it “dismantled” 23 structures where explosive laboratories, weapons, observation posts and other infrastructures belonging to armed groups are located.
D -Ja Touma also stated that an UNRWA, which has not been able to provide services in the camp since early December, has not received a prior warning about the explosions of the Israeli authorities.
On Thursday, two laws adopted by Israel’s parliament last year, which prohibited Unrwa’s activities on Israeli soil and prohibit contact between Israeli employees and UNRWA employees came into force. Israeli officials accuse UNRWA of being a complicit in Hamas, a claim that the agency denies.
D -Ja Tuma said the Israeli government “did not tell UNRWA how they intend to apply” laws and that UNRWA teams are “remaining and delivering.”
On October 7, 2023, there was a jump in the violence on the west coast of the west coast of Hamas and the subsequent war in Gaza.
Hundreds of Palestinians have been killed as the forces have strengthened their raids, saying they are trying to straighten lethal Palestinian attacks against Israelis on the West Coast and Israel.
Israel has built about 160 settlements that have lived about 700,000 Jews since it occupied the West Coast during the Middle East war in 1967. Permissions are considered illegal under international law, although Israel disputes this.
