The best US prosecutor in Manhattan resigned after refusing a corruption case against New York Mayor Eric Adams.
Daniel Sasson, a conservative lawyer, recently promoted by President Donald Trump, said the rejection of the case would put a “breathtaking and dangerous precedent”.
Sassoon’s departure – along with two other officials of the Ministry of Justice – is the last sign of concern because of the enclosing changes that the Trump administration makes in the federal law enforcement authority.
Adams is believed to have accepted gifts totaling over $ 100,000 (£ 75,000) from Turkish citizens in exchange for services. He denies the allegations.
The case was originally brought in September 2024 by officials appointed by former President Joe Biden.
But on Monday, appointed Trump, who acts as a Deputy Prosecutor General Emil Bove, ordered Sassoon to abandon the case, stating that he “limited” the mayor’s ability to deal with “illegal immigration and violence”.
Boww did not turn to the merits of the case and noted that the Ministry of Justice would reserve the right to reimburse the allegations after the mayor of New York in November.
Sacon declined to refuse the case, however, setting out his reflections in a letter to the boss of Boww, Prosecutor General Pam Bondi on Thursday and said that she had not seen a reason “conscientious” to cut the case.
“Since the law does not support the dismissal, and since I am convinced that Adams has committed the crimes he has been accused of, I cannot agree to seek dismissal led by incorrect considerations,” she wrote.
Sasun said Adams had “incorrect proposal for assistance in the implementation of immigration in exchange for dismissal”.
Boww returned to a letter that accepts his resignation. He accused Sasson of trying to “continue to pursue politically reasoned prosecution, despite the explicit indication of rejecting the case.”
He also said that other prosecutors who have worked in the Adams case will be put on vacation and will be subject to internal investigation – and that Sassoon will also investigate.
The other two prosecutors of the Ministry of Justice resigned on Thursday: John Keller, acting head of the public ward for corruption, and Kevin Driscol, a senior employee in the criminal ward of the department.
Mayor Adams, Democrat, expressed their willingness to work with the Trump administration when it comes to the president’s firm immigration policy. On Thursday, after meeting with Trump’s “Border Tsar” Tom Homan, the mayor agreed that immigration officials could restore an office in the city island of Rickers.
In a statement, Adams said, “I want to work with the new federal administration, not a war with them, to find a common position and to improve the life of New Yorkers.”
New York Mayor met Trump in Florida days before he took office and then attended his oath ceremony on January 20. Adams denied at the time he was discussing his legal problems with the arriving president.
On Thursday, Trump told reporters that he did not ask the case against Adams to be dropped.
However, Boww’s letter described his instructions to dismiss the case as “direct orders that fulfill the policy of a duly elected president.”
Adams was accused of last fall on charges of wire fraud, bribery and receiving the campaign of foreigners.
According to an indictment on 57 pages, the mayor allegedly accepted more than the stay of the hotel, lavish dishes and improvements to Turkish nationals in early 2016, when he was president of the New York city of Brooklyn.
In one case, it is alleged that Adams paid $ 600 for a stay with two nights at a luxury hotel in Istanbul, a visit that was estimated at approximately $ 7,000.
