The sudden resignation of India Vice President Jagdip Dhakhar on Monday night sparked speculation about what caused this move.
Dhankar, also chairman of the Upper House of Parliament, announced his resignation on the first day of the monsoon session, citing health concerns.
The ruling party Bharatiy Gianna (BJP), who nominated him for the post, has not yet commented on his resignation.
But many opposition leaders have expressed a surprise in this move, with a deputy saying that there is more of him “than the eye meets.”
74 -year -old Dhankhar took office in August 2022, and its period will continue until 2027.
On Monday, Dhankhar chaired Raja Sabha – the upper house – a session and swore to new members.
He also received an impeachment notification against a Supreme Court judge, Yavant Varma, signed by over 50 MPs, after the discovery of money at the judge’s home earlier this year. Justice Varma denied any misconduct from him or his family.
Dhankhar’s official schedule listed a visit to the Western city of Jaipur on Wednesday as Vice President.
But on Monday night, he presented his resignation letter to President Drupa Mumu, saying he wanted “to prioritize healthcare and to follow medical advice.”
“It was a privilege and satisfaction to witness and participate in the remarkable economic progress of India and the unprecedented exponential development during this significant period. The service in this transformative era of our nation’s history was a real honor,” said Dhankar.
The sharp move sent pulsations through political circles, some noted that they had talked to Dankhar only hours before his resignation.
“What is happening in this government?” Asked Anand Duby, a spokesman for the Shiv Seine (UBT).
“This decision came without a proper consultation or discussion. If health was anxiety, the resignation could be filed several days before the session or even after,” he said.
Manish Tearwari, a member of the main opposition party of India, called this move “completely unexpected.”
“Undoubtedly, Dhankhar has to give the highest priority to his health,” he said.
“But, obviously, there is much more to his completely unexpected resignation than meets the eye.”
Jaimr Ramesh, another MP from the Congress, called Dankar’s resignation “unprecedented.”
He also indicated the absence of two ministers from a meeting of the Advisory Committee, chaired by Dhankar, which was due to happen on Monday afternoon.
Ramesh said Dhankar was not personally informed about their absence and took “Umbrage” before deferred the Tuesday meeting.
“The resignation of Jagdeep Dhankar speaks high about him. It also talks bad about who was elected Vice President in the first place,” he added.
Dhankar, a lawyer by profession, first entered politics as a Member of Rajastan’s Jhunjhunu headquarters in 1989.
In 2003, he joined the BJP and continued to head the party’s legal department. In 2019, he was appointed governor of the state of West Bengal, where he was often on wooden heads with the government of the state ruled by the Party of the Congress of Trinamol.
He resigned as a manager in 2022 after BJP nominated him as Vice President.
Dhankhar underwent angioplasty in Delhi in March, but quickly resumed his duties and remained active in parliament.
With the place of the Vice President, who is already free, his responsibilities are likely to be processed by Raja Sabha’s deputy chairman or another member designated by the President.
