Hundreds of tiles have fallen from the roof of a centuries -old tower in the Chinese province of Anhui, breaking to the ground near visitors to the site.
Eyewitnesses showed sections of roof collapse, with a number of people closely missing.
Local media cited a statement from the Culture and Tourism Bureau of the Fengin County County, which says that no one was injured in the incident, which happened around 6:30 pm local time (11:30 BST) on Monday.
It is reported that the drum tower – the largest in China – was built in 1375 during the Ming Dynasty, but suffered an extensive reconstruction in 1995.
County officials, about 200 miles from the capital, Beijing, said an investigation was being conducted in a publication shared in the instant messaging app in China, WeChat.
FENGIAN County is known for being the hometown of the founding Emperor of the Ming Dynasty – Emperor Hongu, Ju Yuanjang.
Local authorities have been reported to have moved observers from the scene after the collapse and secured the area. The investigation will look at the design and construction of the repair project, a statement is added by the local media.
According to the reports, the supervision units were also sent to the site with experts invited to assist in the investigation and verification process.
The tower is closed while repairs are carried out, with the date of reopening, which must be announced on a later date.
