The Thailand Supreme Court ruled that former Prime Minister Takin Shinawatra should be prisoned for a year, with another blow to the influential political dynasty.
The decision refers to a previous case when he was sentenced to years in prison for corruption, but eventually spent less than a day to a closed cell, as he was moved to hospital.
On Tuesday, the Supreme Court ruled that this transfer was illegal-and that the 76-year-old would have to serve his sentence in prison.
Thaksin and his family dominate Thai politics as he was first elected prime minister in 2001. His daughter Paetongetarne was previously a leader but was Removed from the office last month over an expiring phone call.
Shortly after the decision was announced, Thaksin released a statement on social media, stating that “Although I lose my physical freedom, I will still have freedom of thought in favor of my country and its people.”
He also swore to maintain his power to serve the monarchy, Thailand and his people.
The former prime minister was overthrown in a military coup in 2006 and spent years living in self-imposed exile, especially in Dubai.
When he returned to Thailand in 2023, he was immediately tried and found guilty of corruption and abuse of power during his time and sentenced to eight years in prison.
But Thaksin only spent hours in a prison cell before complaining about heart problems – and later was moved to a luxury wing at a police hospital in Thailand.
After his request for royal pardon, the Thai king changed his sentence to one year.
Thaksin stayed in hospital for six months, then received a conditional release and moved to his home to Bangkok.
On Tuesday, a Supreme Court judge said in a statement that Thaksin “knows or may accept that it is not in a critical or emergency.”
While Thaksin had major chronic medical conditions, he could be treated as an outpatient, the judge said until he ordered the hospital stay was illegal.
EPA“The 14th floor case,” as it is known in Thailand because of the hospital floor where it was staying, attracts intensive control.
Working on the case has led to criticism from many Thai people who say that rich and powerful often receive privileged treatment.
Before the decision on Tuesday, many closely monitored Thaksin’s movements.
Last week, he flew from Thailand to a private plane to Dubai, where he said he was looking for medical treatment. He said on social media that he intended to fly back to the hearing.
He appeared in court in Bangkok on Tuesday morning with Paetongtarn, smiling and congratulating the media and a group of supporters. Thaksin wore a suit with a yellow tie, the color associated with the Thailand monarchy.
Paetongtarn told reporters after the decision that he was “worried” about his father, but that he and their family were in a “good mood”.
She also said she would take the Pheu Thai Family Party forward at their work as an opposition party.
Thaksin’s case was held during political turmoil in Thailand, and the court’s decision on Tuesday is another sign of the changing riches of the Shinawatra and Feu Tai clan.
“The case of the 14th floor” is not the only case that Takin has faced in recent months.
He was also charged separately in the insult of the Thai king, but last month a court He justified him from Lise-Maste.
Meanwhile, Paetongtarn was involved in a dispute after Cambodia leader Hun Saint was running out of telephone call, which she had with her through the border conflict in Thailand-Kambodia, in which she was heard to turn to him as a “uncle”.
She was then removed from office after the Constitutional Court found that she violated the ethical standards expected by her office.
Thailand parliament last week chose Anutin Charnvracul for the new prime minister, The third in two years.
Anutin’s booms party broke from the Fow Tai -led coalition and provided enough support in parliament by another party to win the Premier.
