Hundreds of Lanzarote homes and roads are flooded after rainfall penetrated the Canary Island on Saturday.

The Lanzarote government has declared an extraordinary state overnight after 6 cm (2.4 inches) rain, poured on the popular tourist destination in just two hours.

The Spanish authorities are not reported injuries – and the emergency is canceled on Sunday morning.

Lanzarote Emergency Services Head told local media that homes were submerged, leaving the floods leaving a “large amount of mud”.

“We work all night, we visit 300 calls overnight, many of them in Arrecife and Teguise,” said Enrique Espinosa on Sunday.

According to local media, emergency services have visited more than 150 incidents in Costa Teguse and over 70 in Arrecife.

The San Bartolome area was heavily affected, according to the Lanzarote government.

The dramatic footage circulating on the social media shows a large flood rush flowing quickly under a bridge, leaving cars stuck on flooding roads.

Rocks are particularly vulnerable to floods when struck with intense rain, as their dry climate and volcanic rock mean that the earth does not absorb large volumes of water.

The torrential rain gave way to the back of the Olivier storm, which in recent days transferred the rocks, the continental part of Spain and Portugal – caused several meteorological signals.

The Spain Meteorological Service has issued weather warnings for many regions of the country from Sunday to Tuesday – including storms in the northeast, rain in the Balearic Islands and wind in parts of the northern and south coast.
