A woman in Australia has unconsciously gave birth to a baby to a stranger after her fertility clinic accidentally implanted another woman’s embryos in her.

Mixing at Monash IVF in Brisbane, Queensland has been accused of human mistakes, Australian media reports.

“On behalf of Monash IVF, I want to say how sorry about what happened,” said Executive Director Michael Knaap, adding that everyone in the fertility clinic is “devastated” in the error.

Last year, the same clinic paid an agreement of $ 56 million ($ 26.8 million) to hundreds of patients whose embryos were destroyed, although they were viable.

According to a Monash IVF spokesman, employees understood the problem in February, when birth parents wanted to transfer their other frozen embryos to another clinic.

“Instead of finding the expected number of embryos, an additional embryo remained in storage,” the ABC spokesman quoted.

Monash confirmed that an embryo from another patient was thawed and transferred to the wrong person, which led to the birth of a child.

The clinic has started the investigation and the incident has been referred to the regulatory authorities. The Knaap said the clinic was confident that it was an isolated incident.

Last year Monash IVF reached an agreement of $ 56 million (£ 26.8 million) in a Action for remarkable classes with 700 ex -patients to destroy embryos after inaccurate genetic tests.

The case found that about 35% of embryos, which were actually normal and could lead to a viable pregnancy, were abnormal from the defective screening.

IVF – or in vitro fertilization – involves the removal of eggs from a woman’s ovaries, which are then fertilized with semen in a laboratory. When fertilized eggs become embryos, they are inserted into the woman’s uterus.

This is an expensive process and is not successful every time.

In 2021, 20 690 babies were born as a result of IVF in Australia and New Zealand, according to New South Wales University ReportS
