Three dead after a fire in adult Ward at a hospital in Hamburg

Three people were killed after a fire broke out at night in a hospital ward that cares for the elderly in Hamburg.

The North German Fire Brigade said they were unable to reach the three victims during the rescue efforts. They died at the scene.

The fire at Marienkrankenhaus was reported shortly after midnight.

About 220 emergency workers were sent to deal with flames and treat patients. More than 35 people were injured.

Two people were taken to another hospital in the city for treatment. One person has life -threatening injuries, the fire brigade said.

They added that 18 others suffered serious injuries and another 15 people had minor wounds.

Some of the wounded were treated in the emergency room of Marienkrankenhaus by hospital staff.

When the first firefighters arrived, the ground floor room at the hospital was already lit and the fire threatened to spread to the room from above.

Patients in other rooms came to their windows to tell firefighters that they could not leave due to smoke. The building has four floors.

The fire brigade said they used gramophone and portable stairs to save patients, several of which were adults and had problems with mobility.

Other patients were aided by corridors by means of fire hoods, a respiratory system used by fire crews in a smoke -filled environment.

Firefighters were able to stop the flames that were distributed in other rooms in the hospital. The reason for the fire is not yet known.
