Three people were killed and 103 others were injured due to a train deraille while on their way to the Egyptian capital Cairo, the country’s health ministry said.
The train was traveling from the northern coastal city of Mara Maruh when seven of its carriage exited the tracks on Saturday, with two carriages canceled, officials said.
The Minister of Health Dr. Khaled Abdul Gafar offered his condolences and prayers to the victims’ families and wished those who had suffered a speedy recovery.
The Ministry of Transport and the Egyptian National Rail Authority (ENRA) is investigating the cause of the crash, which remains unclear.
Enra said in a statement that anyone who finds responsible for derailting will be punished.
He added that technical crews and equipment were sent to clear the remains and restore the services as soon as possible.
Speaking on behalf of the Egypt Transport Ministry, he also offered his condolences to the families of the killed.
Officials said the incident happened on a section between Fuka and Jalal stations in the Mars Matrach.
Dr. Abdul Gafar visited the site of the crash to control the emergency response, and later visited the injured in hospital.
All injured were taken to two local hospitals through an ambulance, according to the Ministry of Health.
He added that the bodies of the three people who are now in custody of the prosecutor’s office.
The Egypt rail accidents are common, partly due to poor maintenance and lack of investment.
One of the most deadly trains disaster occurred in 2002, when more than 370 people died after a fire on a train traveling south of Cairo broke out.
