US Embassy employees in the US and their Baghdad addicts must be evacuated by Iraq due to increased security risks, US government sources said.
The officials did not say exactly what caused the removal, but in recent days conversations about Iran’s nuclear program seemed to have stopped.
An employee of the US State Department told the BBC on Wednesday: “We are constantly evaluating the appropriate staff posture at all our embassies.
“Based on our last analysis, we decided to reduce the imprint of our mission in Iraq.”
This move comes after weeks of conversations between the US and Iran – President Trump hoped to make a deal to stop Tehran, which develops a nuclear weapon.
Trump said on Wednesday that he was becoming less confident that Iran would stop enriching Uranus.
Earlier this week, he also held a 40 -minute phone call -he was said to be “tense” -with the Prime Minister of Israel, who has long been arguing about a military, not a diplomatic approach.
Asked Wednesday night about the decision to evacuate the staff from many parts of the Middle East, Trump said, “Well, they move because it can be a dangerous place and we will see what happens.”
He added: “But they were – and we have informed us to move and we will see what will happen.”
With nuclear conversations at a critical moment, it is not yet clear how much the US message is a signal, unlike true concern.
But Iranian Defense Minister Aziz Nasirzade said his country would avenge the US bases in the region if the conversations fail and Trump ordered military strikes against the Islamic Republic.
Reuters News Agency reports that US Secretary of Defense Pete Heget also approved the voluntary departure of families to US military officials from the Middle East, including Kuwait and Bahrain.
Testimiting the Congress Committee on Wednesday, the Pentagon said he believed there was “many indications” that Iran “moves to something that will look a lot like a nuclear weapon.”
Iran says that the uranium enrichment program is for civil energy production and that it is not trying to build an atomic bomb.
Also on Wednesday, the UK’s marine operations organization, part of the Royal Navy, issued a warning, saying that increased military tensions in the Middle East could affect shipping.
Initially, the price of oil increased more than 4%as the news about the evacuation of the United States, in anticipation of regional uncertainty, potentially leading to supply problems.
About 2,500 US troops are based in Iraq, according to the Ministry of Defense.
