US President Donald Trump has called on Israel’s prime minister to “pardon” Benjamin Netanyahu, who is in court for suspected corruption or completely eliminated the case.
In a social media publication, Trump also claims that the United States has rescued Israel – hinting at his intervention in Israel’s war with Iran – and now he will also “save” Netanyahu.
The Israeli Prime Minister denies accusations of bribery, fraud, and confidence violation for which he has been in court since 2020.
Israel’s main leader Jair Lapid criticized Trump’s statement, saying he should not “interfere with an independent state’s legal process.”
Trump’s post comes days after he rebuked Israel to attack Iran after he announced a deal to end the fire after a 12-day exchange of missiles between the two.
Netanyahu repeatedly praised Trump’s decision to bombard Iran’s nuclear equipment on Sunday, calling it a “bold” move.
By publishing on his social platform for the truth, Trump described his longtime ally as a “great hero who made so much” for Israel and “warrior”.
He said that the process of Netanyahu should be “canceled” or he or she must be pardoned, adding that he had learned that Netanyahu had to appear in court on Monday. Netanyahu has been repeatedly in court since the beginning of the process.
Trump has identified the case against Netanyahu as a “witch hunt” – the term he repeatedly used to describe the investigations of his alleged misconduct in the United States.
But Jair Lapid suggested that the attempt at intervention could be part of Trump’s calculated course.
“I hope and I guess this is a reward (Trump) gives (Netanyahu) because he plans to press him to the gas and force him to force him in a deal with hostages that will end the war,” Yair Lapid told the Israeli website on YNET.
Netanyahu’s trials are conducted against the backdrop of conflicts in which Israel has committed himself after Hamas’s deadly and unprecedented attack on October 7, 2023, leading to a delay in court proceedings.
In particular, the duration of the war against Hamas in Gaza has led to claims of some that Netanyahu wants to extend the fight to delay the election and the end of his trials.
