ReutersA statement by Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski, saying that a deal to end war with Russia is “very far away”, attracted a fierce response from Donald Trump.
“America will not put up with this much longer,” the US president said in a social media publication before accusing Zelenski of not wanting peace.
A meeting of most European leaders in London on Sunday agreed with a four-point plan to guarantee the protection of Ukraine in the event of a peace deal with Russia.
“There is probably no great claim to show force against Russia. What do they think?” Trump said, apparently referring to the summit, held two days after his fiery clash with Zelenski in the oval office.
The summit – hosted by the United Kingdom Prime Minister Kyar Starmer – was intended to show support for Ukraine and an attempt to reduce differences between Western countries over Ukraine.
The UK and France said they were working on a European decision led by the conflict.
After the meeting, Zelatus said that a deal to end the war between Ukraine and Russia was “still very, very far away”.
He added that he expects the United States to continue to support Ukraine, despite its own implemented relationships with Trump.
“I believe that Ukraine has a strong enough partnership with the United States of America,” Zelenski said late on Sunday.
But on Monday, Trump answered, reiterating that Zelenski was standing in the path of peace talks.
“This is the worst statement that could be made from Zelenski and America will not put up with this much longer! This is what I said, this man does not want to have peace as long as there is support for America,” he wrote on his social media network.
During a news briefing later on Monday, Trump reiterated his opinion that Zelenski “should be more grateful” for the assistance he received from the United States in the three years after the full-time invasion of Russia in Ukraine.
During the confrontation in front of the White House cameras, the two Trump of US Vice President JD Vance expressed anger at what they perceived as the lack of gratitude to Zelenski.
“Just say thanks,” Vance asked at one point.
The angry exchange meant that A deal that will give the US access to Ukraine’s deposits in rare land ground minerals was left unsigned.
At his press conference on Monday, Trump said he did not believe the agreement was dead.
He added that he would provide an update to the mineral deal late Tuesday.
After the London summit in London, the United Kingdom and France offered a European “Coalition of Desire” to protect Ukraine – but the details were scarce.
Sir Keyer said the idea of sending troops to Ukraine – which would include boots on the ground and planes in the air – there were support of several parties, but he was careful to leave it to individual countries to discuss the matter internally.
The Scandinavian countries have signaled that they are open to the idea if there is support from the United States.
