US President Donald Trump downplayed proposals that he wanted to win the Nobel Peace Prize after weeks of speculation.
“I have nothing to say about it,” Trump told CBS News, the BBC American partner. “All I can do is make wars.” The president added, “I’m not looking for attention. I just want to save life.”
The comments seem to be contrary to previous statements on the subject when he said he should be given the prestigious recognition of his role in ending several conflicts.
In the same telephone interview, Trump said at the exit that he was committed to helping to secure a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine. He said, “Something will happen. We will do it.”
Trump is expected to talk on the phone with pro-ukraine European leaders who meet in Paris on Thursday. His special envoy Steve Vikof is personally present.
The winner of the Nobel Peace Prize must be announced by the Norwegian Nobel Committee on October 10. Four previous US presidents have been honored with honor, including Trump Barack Obama’s political opponent.
In February, Trump complained, “They will never give me a Nobel Prize for Peace. I deserve it, but they will never give it.”
His press secretary Carolyn Levitus has strengthened the message in July, arguing that “very past” Trump won the award.
Other members of his best team have added to Crescendo. At a cabinet meeting last week, his envoy, Steve Vikoff, called him “the Single Best” Nobel Candidate in History because of his work “changing game”.
The five Nobel panel members are appointed by the Norwegian Parliament. Trump has been reported to have discussed his hopes of awards with Norwegian Finance Minister Jens Stoltenberg – although Stoltenberg has not confirmed this.
The US President has been nominated by several countries, including Israel and Pakistan. Trump took a loan to cool the tension between Pakistan and the neighboring India earlier this year.
It was one of six or seven wars that Trump had previously said he was “finished”.
The claim has made control of analysts who say that some of these conflicts have lasted only days – although they have been the result of years of tension. It is unclear whether some of the peace deals will continue.
The BBC Verify studied the role of Trump in the cooling of seven conflicts – including a conflict between Israel and Iran and others.
