Donald Trump and his senior officials have repelled a leaking intelligence report, which says Iran’s US strikes have returned their nuclear program for several months.
As he spoke at the NATO summit in Haga on Wednesday, Trump said the strikes had led to the “virtual deletion” of Iran’s nuclear capabilities and have returned their nuclear program for decades.
Defense Minister Pete Heget, who was also at the top, said the Pentagon’s preliminary evaluation was made with “low confidence” and the FBI investigates the leak.
Tuesday, Sources familiar with the initial report on the Sabbath attacks He told the BBC American partner that Iran’s reserve from enriched Uranus had not been eliminated.
They added that the strikes had put the country’s nuclear program with just a few months – an assessment that the White House was quickly described as “equalizing the wrong”.
According to the report, the strikes of the highly fortified enrichment facilities in Fordo and Nathan have sealed the entrances but failed to destroy the underground structures.
Officials familiar with the assessment of the Defense Intelligence Agency have warned that this is an early assessment that can be changed when more information is made about sites.
The Defense Intelligence Agency is the Pentagon’s own agency, which specializes in military intelligence to support operations. It collects large quantities of technical intelligence, but differs from other agencies like the CIA.
The US has 18 intelligence agencies that sometimes prepare controversial reports based on their mission and field of experience. For example, the US intelligence community is not yet in agreement with the origin of Covid-19.
On Wednesday, while sitting with NATO Chief Mark Ruth, Trump initially acknowledged some uncertainty, saying that intelligence in the attack was “very unconvincing”.
But then he went on to his assessment, saying that “it was very difficult, it was (a) deletion.”
Asked if the US would strike again if Iran resumed its nuclear activities, Trump said, “Of course, I won’t worry about it. It’s big for years.”
Later, Trump likened the blows of America’s nuclear bombing over Hiroshima at the end of World War II.
“I do not want to use an example of Hiroshima, I do not want to use an example of Nagasaki, but this was essentially the same – that ended the war,” he said.
The President of the United States was surrounded by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of Defense Pete Heget, who were both echoing their skepticism to the expiration of intelligence.
Heget said the leak is politically motivated and insists that bombs land “right where they needed”.
He added: “Any assessment that tells you that this is something otherwise, speculates other motives.” It characterizes leakage as “completely false”.
Rubio also questioned the authenticity of the report, suggesting that the content was distorted in the media and the labeling of leaks as “professional stability”.
ReutersThe preliminary evaluation also shows that some of the Iran enriched reserves from Uranus were moved before the attack.
According to sources familiar with it, Iran’s centrifuges remain largely “intact” with destruction, limited to aboveground buildings.
The entrances to two nuclear facilities were blocked and some infrastructure was damaged, they said, but much of the deeper installations were experiencing the blasts.
In the terminology of American intelligence, “low confidence” usually shows that information is either poorly obtained, fragmented or uncertain – which makes it less reliable than evaluations ranked with “moderate” or “high confidence”.
Referring to the heget of the report, which is “low confidence”, suggests that it is indicative and its discoveries can change when more details appear.
The United States hit three nuclear sites in Iran on Saturday – Fordo, Nathan and Isfahan – using the Bunker Buster bombs designed to penetrate hardened underground targets.
While the specific ammunition used in the attack have not been confirmed, the massive 30,000 pounds (14,000 kg) was considered the only weapon capable of destroying underground Iran enrichment facilities.
Tehran has always said that his nuclear program is for peaceful purposes.
Satellite Image (C) 2025 Maxar Technologies through Getty ImagesIn the classes that followed the strikes on Saturday, Gen Dan Kane, chairman of the joint chiefs of the staffs, told reporters that he would take time to evaluate the damage of the facilities.
But he added that “all three sites caused extremely severe damage and destruction.” Satellite images showed six fresh craters, raised about two Fordo nuclear entrance points, as well as gray dust and debris.
However, it is unclear from the latest satellite images how much it damages the sites under the surface.
Hassan Abedini, the deputy political director of Iran’s state operator, said the three sites targeting the US were evacuated “before” and that Iran “did not suffer a major blow because the materials were already removed.”
In the meantime, we and the Israeli officials welcomed the mission as a success.
