President Donald Trump warned that if the Venezuelan jets fly over US naval ships and “put us in a dangerous position, they will be taken down.”
His warning comes after Venezuela flies military planes near an American ship near South America for the second time in two days, and US officials told the US partner of BBC News.
The reports follow a strike in the United States against what Trump’s employees said it was a “ship carrying drugs from Venezuela” operated on by a band, killing 11 people.
President Nicolas Maduro said US allegations of Venezuela were not true and that differences between countries were not justified by a “military conflict”.
“Venezuela has always been ready to talk, to do dialogue, but we want respect,” he added.
Asked by reporters in the oval cabinet on Friday what would happen if the Venezuelan planes again flew US ships, Trump said Venezuela would have “problems”.
Trump told his general, standing next to him that he could do whatever he wants if the situation escalates.
After returning to office in January, Trump constantly intensified his drug efforts in Latin America.
Maduro has accused the United States of seeking a “change of regime through a military threat.”
When asked about the comments, Trump said “We’re not talking about it,” but mentioned what he called “very strange elections” in Venezuela. Maduro swore for his third term in January After challenged elections.
Trump has continued to say that “drugs are pouring out” in the United States from Venezuela and that Tren de Aragua members, a band prescribed as a terrorist organization in the United States, live in the United States.
The US military has moved to strengthen their strengths in the Southern Caribbean, including through the deployment of additional naval ships and thousands of US Marines and sailors to overcome the flow of drugs.
The White House said on Friday that the United States is sending 10 F-35 fighters to Puerto Rico.
When asked about the accumulation of military assets in the Caribbean, Trump said, “I think it’s just strong. We’re strong in drugs. We don’t want drugs to kill their people.”
Trump is a longtime critic of Maduro. The US President doubled For information leading to the arrest of Venezuelan leader to $ 50 million (£ 37.2 million) in August, accusing him of being “one of the largest drug trafficking in the world.”
During Trump’s first term, the US government accused Maduro and other high-ranking Venezuelan officials with a number of crimes, including Narco terrorism, corruption and drug trafficking.
Maduro had previously dismissed US claims.
